Parties/celebrations

Whether you're planning a birthday or a hen do, you'll find plenty of ideas for your celebration on our Party forum.

What would you think if your child was invited to an activity party but there was no party food, just juice and biscuits?

The activity is laser shooting in camoflage gear in local woods with look out posts and hidey holes. It's quite expensive and the package only includes juice and biccies.

It's 2 hours so am thinking I would do it 2-4pm with juice, biccies and birthday cake at the end as son't really want to shell out fo food also.

What do you reckon?

LOL a lot at delegates!

FrannyandZooey · 19/01/2009 21:48

i would just put "join us for laser doodah shooting party, plus juice and biscuits at half time"

i would not care as parent whether or not meal was provided so long as you told me in advance

Lilyloo · 19/01/2009 21:48

DrNorthener ds would happily go this time with nothing to eat (he nearly 7)
Just provide plenty of juice and a snack.
As long as it on invite i think that's fine. Hope your ds enjoys it , ds would like that!

DrNortherner · 19/01/2009 21:50

OOh it's just ocurred to me, will some folk possible be horrified at shoting type partry?

FrannyandZooey · 19/01/2009 21:51

erm you mean folk like me?
yes probably

ChasingSquirrels · 19/01/2009 21:52

yes, but their ds's will LOVE it.

cheesesarnie · 19/01/2009 21:53

sounds sensible to me.

Lilyloo · 19/01/2009 21:53

DN i think that's always the risk you take with any type of party,
the clown one where kid doesn't like clowns..
I recently did farm one and a child didn't like animals
TBH if they don't like it they won't accept invite imo

DrNortherner · 19/01/2009 21:53

Yes Fran it was yuor name that made me post that!!!

Oooh I'm all in a quandry now. Don't want to be that mum in the playground who hosts shooting parties for 7 yr olds.....

OP posts:
ChasingSquirrels · 19/01/2009 21:54

no quandry, do it, they will love it.

ChasingSquirrels · 19/01/2009 21:54

but don't let my ds read this thread, or I know what he will want in Sep!

FrannyandZooey · 19/01/2009 21:55

lol i knew it
oh do what you like
i really would loathe it i must admit!
not just the shooting thing but the camouflage etc

MmeLindt · 19/01/2009 21:56

As long as you state on the invite that it is just juice and biscuits then I don't see the problem.

DD went to a party recently and they only had sweets so she came home starving. If I had known I would have given her a sandwhich before the party.

LOL at delegates.

aGalChangedHerName · 19/01/2009 21:57

My ds's would have loved that. My ds2 (13) went to Laserquest and had a ball. Go for it!!

Most folks won't mind it honestly.

DrNortherner · 19/01/2009 21:57

I know Ds's close friends would love it and their parents would be OK, but there are a few he would invite and I don't know folks too well. Hmmmm.

I wouldn't expect food at a 2-4 party. Nobody normally eats between 2-4, do they?

But I would make sure there was plenty of water - and probably have a basket of apples and some sweets for them to help themselves to at the end.

Fennel · 19/01/2009 21:59

I would take more snacks because the children will like you better for it (I make shameless attempts to ingratiate myself with children). A few cakes or sandwiches or cereal bars won't cost much compared to the rest of the party, and they'll be happy.

Hungry children are much more grouchy. If you feed them at parties they calm right down. Like puppies.

spicemonster · 19/01/2009 22:02

I wouldn't do food. If anyone is worried about their DS getting hungry, they can arrive with a sandwich when they come to pick him up. And my nephew went to an army thing last year for a friend's 7th birthday and LOVED it. I doubt anyone will think you're a warmonger. I'm a right hippy and I love laser shooting

JumpingDizzy · 19/01/2009 22:04

Of course it'll work, just say a snack is provided but no provision for providing much more. You're already forking out a mint.

seeker · 19/01/2009 22:08

But I would hate the camoflage/shooting element too. But ds would ADORE it, and I would reconcile myself to it by lecturing him on pacificism and "why we don't play with guns" for ages afterwards. He wouldn't listen, being caught up in the blissful memories of the best party he's ever been to (so much better than the weave your own boxer shorts he has at home) but it'd make me feel better and we'd all be happy.

nkf · 19/01/2009 22:09

Everyone is right. Stuff them with juice and water and some kit kats at the end. It'll be a blast...

twentypence · 19/01/2009 23:09

I wouldn't let ds play with guns or wear camo clothing. But I would be happy for him to do this - it's outside, they are running around, it's a party.

Ds played an indoor laser quest at a 6th birthday and it never even occurred to me to be concerned or feel I needed to lecture on pacifism.

However I refused to book the venue for his party settling instead on indoor rock climbing.

elliott · 19/01/2009 23:17

I think it sounds like a fab idea but would feel odd having a birthday party without at least a cake and candles. If it was me I would probably invite fewer people and have them back to my house for party tea afterwards - but that is me, I am also a bit of a 'caterer' and I love the whole party tea thing. But, that's MY agenda and I know ds1 would love this kind of party. I think a bag of snacks (fruit, cereal bars, flapjack) would be a good idea though.

DrNortherner · 21/01/2009 18:43

Oh I'll do a cake at the end, of course I will.
