Parties/celebrations

Whether you're planning a birthday or a hen do, you'll find plenty of ideas for your celebration on our Party forum.

So I have decided on a Cinema Party for DS at home. Anyone recommend a good DVd?

Hi,

My DS1 who is going to be 8 is going to have a few friends around for a cinema party.

What DVD do you suggest?

I am going to turn the conservatory into a cinema.

Do you have any other suggestions to make a great party?

That is my idea of hell.

IAmTheNewQueenOfMN · 17/01/2009 15:43

'The ugly duckling and me' was really good but maybe a bit young, not sure

MaggsS · 17/01/2009 15:43

It's only going to be 6 in total

Narnia, Golden compass, knights tale, Princess Bride.

We had The Simpsons Movie for DD's 8th - went down very well. Or you could try Night at the Museum. Wouldn't bother with anything they have to keep quiet and pay attention to, as they will most probably all want to chat.

Why is it your idea of hell Cornsilk? Cinema parties are v easy, just bung a DVD and some popcorn at them and you can slink off for a glass of wine. We had film, then tea, then back garden fireworks, then they all buggered off home. 'Twas great.

Tinker · 17/01/2009 16:16

But will they all stay and watch the film? I'd imagine a few getting bored and wandering off.

MaggsS · 17/01/2009 16:35

I thought it was a good idea as I can shut the door behind them in the conservatory

I thought we'd have popcorn, maybe hot dogs / burgers and chips and make ice-cream sundaes.

If they want to chat then fine.

Fireworks are a great ieas btw.

Night at the Museum
Shrek (any of them)
Shaggy Dog
The Simpsons
Dr Dolittle
Harry Potter

My ds and his friends must be a different breed of child to stinkeymonkey's. Even coming home for a play after school results in the house being turned upside down and shattered nerves.

blametheparents · 17/01/2009 17:02

Alvin and the Chipmunks
Herbie Fully Loaded
Charlie and the chocolate fatory
Kung Fu Panda (though they may start practising!)
Clone Wars (if it is out yet?)

stinkymonkey · 17/01/2009 17:47

Fair point about the ones who wander off - maybe have something crafty/few toys set out for the ones who need something to do whilst watching film. Can guarantee you will also get at least one who says in a sneery voice 'Oh I've seen this one loads of times', but just ignore them, you can't please 'em all.

Cornsilk - What are you doing to give those kids such shattered nerves? We have done a few cinema parties and they have always been pretty chilled. Only for small groups though - once you get more than about 5 guests them group mayhem potential does seem to increase.

Any tips Stinkymonkey ?
You sound like a bit of an expert

Oooh, this thread is great timing for me, I'm doing this for DD on Tue (she'll only be 4 though so we're going for Madagascar). Same food plans - hotdogs, popcorn & icecream, and my only other idea was to grab all the duvets and put them on the floor so that the children can lounge about on those whilst the adults sit on sofas around the edges.

MaggsS · 17/01/2009 20:29

Let me know how it goes and good luck

How many 4 year olds?

Thanks.

Four guests (my mum always had a guest-per-year-of-your-life rule which I have adopted).

DD suddenly asked tonight if we could also make it a pyjama party. I think she's on to a winner because the party is 5-7pm so her little friends can just go home with full tummies and be put straight to bed.

SeymourButz · 17/01/2009 20:36

oh god camp rock
or that other rocky film with jack black in it

samsonara · 17/01/2009 20:46

Home alone ones?

stinkymonkey · 17/01/2009 21:26

Don't show porn

MaggsS · 18/01/2009 05:24

Good tip Stinky

this is intersting - how do you turn it into a cinema party rather than some kids coming round to watch the tele and them (their parents?) feeling short changed?

ds wants to go to cinema for his b'day, but it's loads of money, and film he wants isn't out for ages yet

MaggsS · 18/01/2009 06:53

Our local cinema does a Saturday club (Odeon)
It changes £1 or £2 for each child and the parents go free. I would do this but the film on the week before and after his birthday he has seen twice already.

We are going to have popcorn and I thought they could make there own ice-cream sundaes

Hot dogs / burgers for tea.

As for the parents I would be happy to have someone else look after my children for a couple of hours.
