Party games/activities for DD's "traditional" birthday party of mainly 10 year olds...

It's the first time since she was little we've been able to have a party at home because we didn't have a suitable house but since we moved, we have the room.

But I am wondering if pass-the-parcel and musical bumps will be quite the done thing for up to 16 mainly 10 year olds? (A few younger). DD is keen to play those kinds of games, but will the more sophisticated young ladies among them find this a bit babyish?

Is there anything I can add to the mix to make it a bit more age appropriate? There will be a few boys but it's mainly going to be girls..

I'm on a budget by the way....

OK I don't have a ten year old, but I remember when I was ten I was still very much a child and still liked childish things but wanted them with a twist, iyswim.

My friends and I actually started recording our own tapes to use when we played Go Fetch It (which we were WAY too old for, but loved for some reason).

Pass the parcel with a prize in each wrapper might be babyish, but what if instead of putting prizes inside you put some forfeits so that you don't necessarily WANT the parcel to land with you? or what if it's played in teams and there are several parcels going around and you need to try to collect sets of things (cards, board game pieces) within the parcels and the first to complete a set wins a prize - pass the parcel bingo if you will.

OK these are probably totally shite ideas, they're just off the top of my head, but I hope you understand what I'm getting at. I don't think those games are necessarily too babyish, you can make them really fun if you get creative.

Hopefully someone with some an actual ten year old will be along in a minute to say something sensible.

I run an all boys cub pack (aged 8 - 10). We do an end of term party an it usually involves lots of messy stuff which is fine if you play outdoors. Things like getting sweets from a tray of jelly, done in relays. Make a flour sandcastle, turn it out and put a marshmallow on the top. you then have to take slices down the castle and the one that makes it topple has to eat the marshmallow not using their hands. Hang coconut ring biscuits from the washing line and get the first one to eat their biscuit is the winner (hand behind back). Apple bobbing. Is any of this any good?

Oh yes, I was going to suggest apple bobbing but thought was too Hallowe'en.

Also that flour cake game is brilliant fun. We used to play it with a grape instead of a marshmallow.

Sweets in jelly relay sounds great. messy is pretty much always fun.

The one where you have to eat chocolate wiith big gloves on and use a knife and fork is popular with older kids.

I think games that are a bit more of a challenge work well with the older ones.

Like the idea of the castle game.

Another idea is design the best snowman (can be an alien or whatever else) game, need two willing adults, a pile of waste paper and two big sellotape dispensers plus the usual carrot and things for eyes. They have to basicllly sellotape everything to the adult. Give them 10 mins and prizes for the best creation.

Divide into pairs or threes, give them cheapo toilet rolls and the team who makes the best mummy wins

Disco dancing goes down well. Also fab game which works really well with this age group which is like Pictionary.
Divide kids in to 2/3 teams and give each group a couple of pens and a pad of paper. Make up a list of about 10 words eg. High School Musical 3, school, hat, x factor, dancing etc. Then one adult or can be a child sits at the top of the stairs or maybe safer in another room (it's important they have to move/run a bit to get to the person with the list). When you say go one person from each group runs to the person with the list and gets the first word. They then run back to the other members of their team and draw the word..no talking is allowed. When the team guess it one of them (usually the one who guessed)goes and whispers the word to the person with the list and gets the next word. The object of the game is to guess all of the words on the list. The team which gets to the end of the list first wins.
Kids and adults all love this game!

Ds will be 8 on Friday. He is having a party at home on Sunday (8 children).

We will be playing the following games:-

Pass the parcel
Musical something or others
Memory game (put about 12 items on a tray, give them 5 minutes to look at it, take tray away, and they have to write down all they can remember.
Variation on pin the tail on donkey.
Dress the (in our case Playmobil man, but could use princess etc). Before the party draw a picture of your chosen man/princess wearing only underwear. Photocopy it, and stick both copies onto pieces of card. Make paper clothes to fit. For the game, divide people into two teams. Both teams have a dice, the children take turns to throw it. If they get a six, they can add an item of clothing to the man/princess (stick on with blu tack). First team to dress their character wins.
Simon says or variation on.
Consequences
Drawing in the dark - each person gets pencil and paper. Turn off lights, then instruct them to draw a scene (e.g. a castle with a princess, a pony, some fairies, trees etc). then turn on the lights and laugh at everyone's pictures!
