...for somebody that you considered to be one of your best and oldest friends, but whom you haven't actually seen for 2 years, and live no-where near?

I've left it far too late - her birthday is on Saturday. We wouldn't normally buy for each others birthdays any more, but I feel that this one is a bit special.

champagne?

FourArms · 20/11/2008 09:54

That's a good idea. Would have to send v.v.v well packaged though!

Where is she? The secret to long distance gift buying is to buy locally to the person receiving the gift... so if she's in Australia, find an Australian wine company and buy online for local delivery.

[my family are scattered all over the world, I've become an expert]

Not that far away Blinglovin - York to my Plymouth

Aaah, okay, in that case, I'd say don't package it yourself but find a company taht delivers nationally (wine or any of the big department stores are good. or Amazon - which is the best - etc). They then do the packaging and all you do is pay.

Blinglovin · 20/11/2008 10:12

sorry - I don't know if Amazon delivers wine. But my point was that you can get something delivered without having to post it yourself and rely on the slow post office service - whoever you use will dispatch from her local York office (or centrally straight there).

Good plan, I suppose I've still got time if I pay for next day delivery, although maybe she won't be in then as she works, but the thought will have been there

Lots will deliver on Saturdays - so for example I think Amazon has a next day service and a priority service. So you could get delivery on saturday which could work.

Incidentally, i always think jewellery is nice as a 30th gift. Not expensive necessarily - but lovely beads or something that are in the colour your friend wears the most can be nice.

I've got a plan - been looking online, and a 75cl bottle of Moet with a balloon will be about £50 delivered. Think I'm going to buy a bottle and a balloon, stick in a sturdy box and send it Special Delivery. That will still only cost about £35.

Right, off to shops now....

Sadly I don't really know her well enough to know about jewellery anymore. Our lives have gone in really seperate directions. We lived together for 3 years at uni, so I've known her since I was 18. Now I'm married with two kids and a SAHM, whereas she's travelled the world, and settled down with a (female) friend from school and won't be having any children so is living the high life.

Note: don't think there is anything wrong with gay couples having children by whatever means, but her partner doesn't think it is right so they won't be. I'm hoping that as the DS's grow older, they will be really fun 'aunties' as she will be their godmother when we get them christened.

Champagne sounds excellent! I'm sure she'll appreciate
