Party bag for birthday child - yes or no?

Always have done, but now rethinking. Just spent £48 on 6 bags, to incl dd. However, politically may need to invite 1 more. Have told dd that 'her' bag may need to be given to extra child. PS Never usually spend so much on bags, but is v cheap party so agreed with dh that we wd do 'nice' bags. However, we are skint, so don't really want to go and spend another £8 if I can help it. Is that mean to my dd?

Oooh £8 party bag? Can my kids come to the party?

Twiglett · 29/09/2008 17:54

YES party bag for birthday child

wtf have you put in it to make it £8? .. should be £1 maximum .. other parents won't thank you you know

Hulababy · 29/09/2008 17:54

 at £8 per party bag!!! I normally do about £1, lol.

Yes, I normally do a party bag for DD - however I don't think it is necessary as they have so much anyway.

Well, I wish I'd asked for ideas beforehand! Not expecting thanks btw, Twiglett. Have learnt from bitter experience that no-one will reply/ eat the food/ like their prize as much as someone else's etc!
Toiletry bags containing a couple of little bits. I thought it would be nice . The rest of the party is v cheap, so will be only £85 ish in total.
Loumacca - next year

I think the birthday girl will have to go without her bag. My kids get the left over bits from bags - some of the plastic junk comes in bags of 10/whatever, and there are spares, IYSWIM - but not a bag itself.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/09/2008 18:06

no - but then I don't do party bags at all.
If I did - I don't know.
I do a treasure hunt and they all (including birthday child) find a prize. But only costs peanuts.
Am lol at party only being £85 when you are skint.
How old is dd? Will she understand concept?

stroppyknickers · 29/09/2008 18:09

Squirrels - Party paid for by my gps in lieu of present (v small token given) as we are skint. They like doing this, and the dcs are happy. DD is 9, will be 10. Think you are sensible fridays child - dd doesn't need the stuff, and will probably get presnts from friends.

Would always give to party child. However at last party gave all children empty bags with names on and then in each game they got to dip into my lucky dip box (ie each round of pass the parcel or each time they were out at musical statues). By the end of the party all bags were full of obligatory tat. I think I spent less than £10 on bags for all 15 children (prizes were pens, braclets, balls etc) but they loved the excitement of seeing what they would get. Could you do this with your dd - give all attending children the posh bag and then everyone gets turns at dipping into big box.

stroppyknickers · 29/09/2008 18:15

That's a really good idea. It's a sleepover, so might leave them a pass the parcel/ box of tutt for the dvd game. Where can I get cheapy girly bits to put in it? (Am only au fait with boy party bags!)

Like that idea, I did it (but with mini choc bars) for ds1's 6th last Wed.
At 10 I would expect a child to understand the situation, and appreciate that they were getting presents but that you can't afford the extra for their party bag.

stroppyknickers · 29/09/2008 18:27

So a lucky dip with a mix of chocolates (v good idea squirrels) and tutt for them to use during the sleepover. Genius mumsnetters. Thanks

Don't know what 10 year olds are into. Could you go with your dd to Woolies, Claire's Accessories or somewhere similar and have a look what you can get for not too much money that her and her friends would like?

Goodluck!

Ha - did party bags at Claires and got stung!
