Hello, its my son's 2nd birthday in september and im really struggling with what to do. We don't have any friends or family with children (except a few who are all older than 10). I've looked at soft plays for him but you have to pay for a minimum of 6 kids even if they don't show and irs around 300 for use of the soft play and the pp child price. We rented a room for his first and brought toys and our own soft play from home but overall it still cost over £600 so im wanting to keep the price down a bit more this year.

I do still want to do a celebration of some kind for him with our friends and family but im really stuck for ideas.

Were based in newcastle/gateshead if anyone local has ideas too! TIA xx

The beach? A theme park? A show? Ask people if they want to come and let them know how much it will cost.

Can you just have a smaller group at home? We did that for 1st and 2nd birthday. Cant see any reason to spend money on it

He’s 2, he won’t remember. Don’t get stressed

Day trip somewhere - farm park, zoo, National Trust house with decent playground in the garden, aquarium....something similar. You can pay admission for your own family, or simply go to a playground, and provide a picnic for all family members you want to invite - or ask everyone to bring their own savoury and you provide drinks and birthday cake. A 2 year old will enjoy animals or a park, and family will just want to spend time with the birthday boy.

@luckylavender people used to say this to me and you're right, but the parents remember! It's nice to mark occasions for your own memories when when they're too little to get it.

However, given that littles are generally clueless about the options or concept of a birthday I would say this is an opportunity to do what you'd like to do OP. We did stuff like going to a country park for a walk with the fam followed by a pub lunch with cake and singing. Used it more like a family gathering than something resembling a traditional kids party.

What about a farm. Not as a “party” but as a day out?

I wish but I'm currently pregnant with baby number 2 and the idea of having to do the clean up and everything in my home that close to my due date is off the table for me hahaha 😆 maybe next year lol x

I'd also live to do a day out somewhere but its the last weekend of september and it poured down on his bday last year and I don't think I can chance a nice sunny day that late in the year :(

Just have a nice day out with him and a small family gathering at home for presents with a nice cake. It's overwhelming for them to have big parties at age 2. Presents and cake are still new to him so he will enjoy himself with just that.

Teddy bears picnic at home or a local park!

Overthebow · 27/06/2026 21:04

Does he have any friends from nursery you could invite? Or anyone you usually do play dates with? Even if it’s just a few of his friends, you could book a slot at a play cafe or small soft play and bring a cake?

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 27/06/2026 21:07

A theme park
A kids show
Any old "special day out"

We did a soft play and a little show at a small theatre for both ours.

For our dds 4th we did a miniature railway village which was a smash hit. maybe something with trains?
A boat trip could also be fun.

He doesn't know it's his birthday and won't remember what you do so just buy a few good presents, get some balloons and have a few close family members over for cake! Done.

If you need something more have a day out. If you can't trust the weather go somewhere indoors!
