Birthday party like we had as kids in the 1990s

I was talking to my daughter the other day about what birthday parties were like when I was her age.

I was born in 1984, and in my day a Primary school birthday party was a few children at someone's house, party games like pass-the-parcel, sandwiches and sausage rolls, and a cake... That was it, and it was great!

It's my daughter's last year of Primary school this year, and she loves the idea of an old-school birthday party before she moves to Secondary. There are only 6 girls in her class, so we could have them all at home.

So I'm after ideas for a circa-1995 style party.

So far we have:

Musical bumps/chairs/opposites/statues
Pass-the-parcel (ideas welcome for suitable prizes for 10-11 year olds)
An ice-cream station with sprinkles, sauces etc

Any other ideas very welcome, thanks.

I did these for my kids in 2000s
Do a pinata as well. They love that

Needmorelego · 28/01/2025 12:51

These were the type of parties I did for my daughter (now aged 16).
Pass the parcel I usually did small sweets between each layer. For the main prize at that age I'd probably do something like a jewellery making set.
Pin the tale on the donkey - or a variation on whatever thing they are into (so pin the ponytail on a giant poster of Ariana Grande or something).
Have you got (or could you get) one of those dance mats and have a dance competition.
Cake - I bought a chocolate tray bake and served it with squirty cream. That was always a hit.

The chocolate game - www.wikihow.com/Play-the-Knife-and-Fork-Chocolate-Game

Painting each others nails

Hula hoop competition to see who can spin it longest

Memory game - stick a load of items on a tray, take one away and they have to say what's gone

Chasingsquirrels · 28/01/2025 13:02

Be aware that party games go far quicker than you'd imagine and you are left with time to kill.

I always had treasure hunts and did the same for my kids, they love hunting down the clues.

Notgivenuphope · 28/01/2025 13:03

This sounds absolutely marvellous!

TheAirfryerQueen · 28/01/2025 13:14

1980s kid. I was born in November so Mum had to adapt. We'd have a "picnic" on the floor of the lounge. All the traditional games, Mum made her own pin the tail...by making a homemade tail and draw a donkey and stick it on a cork board! Musical chairs. Pass the parcel. (Newspaper wrapping!) Food was the "on sticks" variety, weak squash, crisps, sandwiches, with jelly for afters and cake in kitchen paper to take home. We had the music on cassette tape. Ballons. Paper hats. Simpler times!

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 28/01/2025 13:17

Jelly and ice cream
Pass the parcel - little stationery items, lip balms etc?

ohwhattododo · 28/01/2025 13:17

Brilliant ideas everyone, thanks so much.

Pin the tail on the donkey, twister, that game where you pass the balloon or orange under the chin is hilarious, pass the parcel, musical bumps and statues, tea party style food, just letting them play is lovely, you can buy sports day kits online if they'd like to do some races, we do that. Hire an entertainer like a magician or puppeteer, I always had an entertainer at my parties in the 80s/90s, jelly and ice cream, treasure hunts are fun, face painting, you can get some nice kits online and do it yourself, doesn't have to be perfect. Hope your child has a lovely party 🥳

Cestfoutu · 28/01/2025 13:30

My daughter(born 1992) did this for her 16th (at her request). Similar to many ideas here, but don't forget cheese and pineapple on sticks! Also lots of silly balloon games like passing between the knees in a line or over thread/between the legs. Squeak piggy squeak too. They all had a great time and enjoyed the nostalgia!

SmeagalsSister11 · 28/01/2025 13:31

Pass the parcel prize lolly in each layer and prize a poppit as they all love them lately or colouring/stationary set

blobby10 · 28/01/2025 13:40

My three are now in their 20s but their 'old-school' birthday parties seemed to be very popular Grin two of them were summer(ish) birthdays so I was lucky enough to be able to decamp into a field owned by my parents. We had treasure hunts and obstacle courses (parents warned not to send them in decent clothes and to bring wellies!) as well as pass the parcel, musical bumps and plenty of food - picnic style sandwiches, crisps, jelly, ice cream, cake etc etc served on hay bales in the barn. For the early spring birthday I usually hired a village hall with a bouncy castle, then the above games except the treasure hunt. Only did parties up until year 6 - after that it was a trip bowling or suchlike with just a couple of best friends.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/01/2025 13:41

We still play this at christmas as adults The Flour Game

BitOutOfPractice · 28/01/2025 13:42

I’m much older than you but I did parties like this for my DDs (now 21 ahs 25) at their request when they were little.

Second all the suggestions but don’t forget about playing Sleeping Lions to quieten things down if it all gets a bit fraught!

SatinHeart · 28/01/2025 13:50

Musical chairs is a classic

ohwhattododo · 28/01/2025 13:52

Thanks so much, I'm loving all these ideas!

My daughter's birthday's not til the late Spring, so I will be able to do some of the activities outside I hope.

I think it'll be a lot more exhausting than standing chatting to other parents at a trampoline park!! But so worth it for one last 'hurrah' before the leap to Secondary school. I think I'm more excited than her!

@BitOutOfPractice love the Sleeping Lions suggestion!

Also love the balloon/flour/chocolate games suggestions.

And food on sticks!!

@TheAirfryerQueen I'm a November birthday too and my parties sound identical to yours - the good old days hey!

I think we'll do a traybake cake as suggested by @Needmorelego, but I usually also make her a themed cake (previous ones have been Pingu, Elsa, rainbow colours, pick n mix), if anyone has any 1990s suggestions? (Of course the more cake the better).

I was born in 1979 and my mum threw me parties like this every year. We lived rurally with no phone and as my birthday is in the summer my late brother would go cycling and deliver all the invitations to my friends.
We played all the usual party games and cocktail sausages and jelly and ice cream were such a treat! The cake would always be huge from the bakery, covered in buttercream icing and sprinkles. Heaven!
My kids are older now but I continued with these parties for them when they were small and they always went down well.

BusySittingDown · 28/01/2025 13:58

We always used to play Sleeping Lions and someone ALWAYS fell asleep 😂.

Cocktail sausages and cheese, pineapple and pickled onions on cocktail sticks. They were all staples at any parties I went to (along with meat paste sandwiches but don't do those 🤮). I'm talking a bit earlier than 95 though. I'm a similar age to you OP as I was born at the end of '83.

Prizes...erm sweets? Lip balms, fluffy bed socks (can get a pack of 8 cheaply on Amazon in fun designs, I got some for a sleepover gift bag for my DD's friends and they loved them), slime 😬. They all seem to bloody love slime at that age.I don't think you can go wrong with good sweets though. My DD's friend group are obsessed with squashies sweets. Bouncy balls, mini cuddly toys if you can get them cheap.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/01/2025 13:58

Arctic roll!!

Beamur · 28/01/2025 14:00

Good games for a bit longer-
Two teams, have to get from a start to a finish point - holding onto each other like a crocodile, but they can only move forward by using a 'stepping stone: which is a sheet of paper. One sheet per person but you have to pass the paper from the back to the front of the crocodile. Meanwhile you have additional players whose job it is to snatch unoccupied pieces of paper so you then have two people sharing etc. winners get to the finish line first.
You can repeat and make it a bit more challenging by tearing the paper in half.
Cheerleader rock paper scissors (loser/s become cheerleaders for the winner) - absolutely deafening.
Splat/splatterglories
Werewolf if old enough is a good group game
Wink murder
There's loads of great game ideas on Instagram - for active games I think there's a channel called something like 'just play sports' that has loads of ideas which need very little equipment
Balloon races - pass over/under

Shetlands · 28/01/2025 14:01

I was wrapping up a pass the parcel for my 9yr old granddaughter's party and she said to make sure there were enough sweets between each layer so that all the girls would have some. I said that wouldn't work because it's whoever has the parcel when the music stops. GD was horrified! "No Granny, you make sure to stop the music so that everyone has a turn. It's not the 80s now!" 😂

Gloriainextremis · 28/01/2025 14:02

'Guess the Crisp Flavours' game.

Eating cream crackers with a knife and fork whilst wearing a bobble hat, scarf and big gloves.

How about a mystery 'What's in the box?' game? Put a variety of things in a box, and they have to put their hand in a hole at the top of the box and identify them while blindfolded. The box is open at the back so you can swap things in and out. Peeled grapes feel horrible to the touch, so do cold baked beans. 😂You can put in things like a tennis ball, a cork, a pencil etc as well.

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 28/01/2025 14:03

I did this sort of party for my 90s born children when they were primary school age. I echo all the above suggestions, another game which they enjoyed was a sort of treasure hunt, only works outside though.
Cut up some wool into lots of pieces about 3" long and before the party drape them over the plants in your garden( obviously got to have a well-planted garden for this one), send the children out hunting for them, the one finding the most gets a prize.

BusySittingDown · 28/01/2025 14:04

My mum always used to get my cakes made by someone she knew so they were always quite fancy. I didn't like cake when I was little - what a weirdo!!! Love it now though.

Anyway, my DH, who is a few months older than me, fondly remembers his Mum making him a hedgehog cake at his parties. He always remembers it like the best thing ever. Like the one in the picture.

Birthday party like we had as kids in the 1990s
Beamur · 28/01/2025 14:06

Treasure hunts are great+ love the wool idea. One of DD's favourite bits of party loot was one where the treasure hunt was little plastic kitten toys. You kept what you found and party Mum had extras so everyone was happy!
