Think dh might be buying me an eternity ring as a 'surprise' and I won't like it

Dh is making loads of fuss for me for my 40th in June and has also said he's getting me a special surprise present. He won't give me any clues as I usually guess things really quickly and he's determined that I won't spoil the surprise.

But my intuition bells are ringing something alarming at the moment and I've got a feeling he's getting me an eternity ring - just from things he's said and the way he's reacted to a few things lately.

A few months ago I went shopping with one of my friends and she took me into a jewellers under the premise of her choosing one for her 10th anniversary for her dh to buy at a later date. The one she chose looked fab on her and I really liked it for her - her fingers are slim, it matched with her wedding ring, etc etc. I didn't even look for anything that would suit me, but I know that I'd need something much chunkier for my sausage fingers. I think dh has told her what he's buying and just have a feeling they are in cahoots together.

If it is a ring he's getting me, I'd totally appreciate it, but it would be nice to have one I absolutely love. Might be barking up the wrong tree anyway! Is it worth telling my friend this?

ooh! yes i do think you should get the message through to your friend somehow. it would be horrid if he splashed out and you had to pretend to like the results! can you re-open the conversation with your friend... something like complimenting her on her choice and saying if you were ever lucky enough to get one you would like blah blah?

good luck!

but don't get your hopes up - what if it turns out the suprise is a new hoover [thud]

i do think your dh is nice to make such a fuss of your 40th

Moomin · 20/04/2008 10:50

I know, I'm very lucky, he's fab. I keep joking that it's probably a horse or something equally inappropriate (I hate horses). THink will talk at my friend and not ask her to react to it but then she has the info if she needs to warn dh!

Yes, that's a good idea Moomin. Dh is buying me a jewellery item (the last time he did that was for our wedding 15 yrs ago!) and we're choosing it together. There's a nice Welsh gold place not far away from here and I think we'll make an occasion of it. It has a cafe and I love a nice cup of tea and a cake - probably as much as choosing the item!

hifi · 20/04/2008 10:59

can you check the store has a returns policy?

Moomin · 20/04/2008 11:06

I've got a feeling he's having/had it made, maybe? He went off into a little market town in the countryside the other week to 'see someone' about my present- he had an address to find. One of my other friends lives in the same place and although she has said she know nothing about it, she;s just the type of person to know where little workshops and jewellery designers are...

am probably way off mark, but I just have a funny feeling in my water (which has rarely let me down the past). AND my wedding ring has gone missing.... (am thinking he's taken it for sizing) and we've looked everywhere for it. He's said 'let's get your birthday out of the way first then we'll replace your ring' - think maybe he's give it to someone as a model for the other ring.

God I'm going to feel so foolish if he's bought me a new hoover

although in this house, a horse would get more use!

I love the "although in this house, a horse would get more use!" It's good that he has (probably) taken your wedding ring, though. It should be a decent match colour-wise that way. That just leaves the style and colour of stones or whatever, I suppose. >

ninedragons · 21/04/2008 06:13

Hmm. Hard to do anything without leaving him crestfallen about his failure to surprise you. But I'd definitely mention it to your friend. Perhaps even return to the shop and point out things you do love.

You never know, if the jeweller is any good s/he may say when given your wedding ring "Ah, but this size is what we call in the trade Sausage Fingers, so something more substantial is called for".

Well, I have gone and dropped myself in it with dh, GOOD and PROPER. I am 99% sure that he has got me an eternity ring - either a new one or he's had my wedding ring adapted. A few more things happened and it became even more obvious it was a ring... and I'm sure I'll really love it now, I have no doubts about what it looks like.

BUT I'm well-known as a complete blabbermouth and I have found it agonising to keep my trap shut about knowing, although I managed very well and there's only a week to go til my b'day now.... except I got veh veh drunk ata friend's house last night and I blurted out that I knew what it was to dh (when he was telling our friends it was a complete secret/surprise). We haven't actually said what it is but I was doing the old wagging of the finger and trying to look all-knowing and going "I do know what it is... and I LOVE IT". I forgot all about it until we got home and it turns out dh is really upset with me . He said he's not really very surprised that I guessed what it was, but he's really annoyed with me for not being able to keep my gob shut til next week . I am sorry. and I still don't know what it looks like or when I'm getting it, etc.

Oh god, I feel horrible now
and I've got a hangover that is killing me

OK, on your birthday, put on a HUGE look of surprise, and blurt out "OMG, I thought it was a new hoover, but I like this SO MUCH BETTER!"

(add the last bit, in case he is tempted to get you a hoover next time)

cmotdibbler · 29/05/2008 10:41

Did you discuss it when you were sober ? If not, then on your birthday do the whole 'omg, can't believe it, thought you'd be buying me a hoover, amazing....' thing, and if asked about what you said last night, look at him in a befuddled way and deny all knowledge of saying anything.

Moomin · 29/05/2008 10:46

lol

God I feel like such a wanker.
He has gone to so much trouble, effort and money for my birthday. Last night he said that he thought this had been the only present he'd got me in the whole 10 years we've been together that I haven't vetted in advance or guessed. and now I have. I was so pissed

Moomin · 29/05/2008 10:48

I've already texted him at work this morning to say sorry and that I am really excited about it. He's taking me away tomorrow to a posh hotel for the night and a meal. I really don't deserve him.

So what was it then Moomin? Were you right? Did you act surprised?
