Its been so long since I went to a wedding frankly I can't remember the food...
I can remember wedding food I thought was awful though - bangers and mash was one. Would have been ok if the mash weren't out of a packet and piled 2 foot high...
And there was a barbeque once which just didn't work for me.
All other wedding food has been perfectly pleasant if forgetable.

pork spit roast was fab.

schneebly · 06/04/2008 17:02

mine was rather nice because I picked everything on the menu

It was a winter wedding and a very small party for the meal so there were several choices.

I had

homemade lentil soup

Roast beef and yorkshire pudding

Apple Pie with cinnamon ice cream

twas so comforting and lovely - we had a log fire blazing too!

i liked what we had

chicken kebabs, persian rice and tomato/harissy sauce then chocolate fondant - yum ...

Our wedding is still talked about in terms of food and wine.

We had:

Smoked trout salad to start.

Rack of lamb with a herb crust, various potatoes, and veg.

Hot cherries and icecream

Cheese and biscuits.

It doesn't sound like much, but the chef was brilliant and bought good quality simple food.

Turned out that he was delighted to be cooking wedding food that was different (16 years ago) and really put his back into it.

Champagne reception to start, and I mean champagne.

Just checked on "a what would it cost now calculator" and the meal cost modern day equivalent of £40 a head. That does not include wine, on which we paid corkage.

Best pudding ever was raspberry and chocolate syllabub with homemade ginger snaps.

Good - ours ;) Highlight of which was probably sticky toffee pudding, yum.

Also good - chicken stuffed with peppers and pinenuts, wrapped in parma ham and served with chive cream, bride asked for 'chicken dish which is not boring', and got it.

Good, but - rich, heavy beef dish served on an absolutely baking hot August day, delicious but so wrong for the weather.

Could have been good - sausage and mash, but with baked beans AND onion gravy. Wrong.

Disaster - leek and potato soup, so bland that the entire table took one sip, and reached, as one, for the salt and pepper. Actually quite comic.

The one with the non-boring chicken had a choice of two starters - poached pear with blue cheese, or chicken liver parfait. Fortunately no one was in the early stages of pregnancy!

ours got loads of positive comments, and of course I have to agree:

Winter wedding:
Tomato Soup & basil cream and croutons
Beef fillet medallions with a gorgeous rich sauce, roast pots and veg
Raspberry and chocolate pavlova

Buffets rock. Everone is happy, very social and bride can move around to see people. Much less stress.

Not cold crappy ones with quiche and soggy pork pies though....

Hot buffets....chickpea with sausages, delicous stwes etc with crusty bread, cheese, cold meats and naughty deep fried pastry treats......

Lots of chocolate stuff and fruits...

man I love weddings.

LaComtesse · 06/04/2008 18:55

My cousin had some sort cheese/tomato starter, roast beef/veg option for main and pavlova for sweet with icecream in character pots for the children, tea and coffee to follow - which was very welcome after spending the afternoon taking the wedding snaps outside in Oct (it was a week or so before the weather turned cold!) .

Worst was a buffet where I was on the last table to be called up and as we got our savoury plates, they cleared them away behind us for the sweets (so we had to wait another 25 mins or so to get at them which then vanished in a like fashion!).

janeite · 06/04/2008 18:59

I haven't actually HAD this but I would like it:

Cold mezze plates served to the tables for starters, so everybody can pick at it: olives, bread, hoummus etc etc

Same idea for pudding - a chocolate fondue on every table with fruit, marshmallows, cubes of sponge etc.

Sociable, easy, no waiting for servers whilst it all goes cold, no waiting for your turn to get to the buffet and then finding someone's eaten the last profiterole etc.

HonoriaGlossop · 06/04/2008 19:28

i have to suggest, whatever the food, that it not be a buffet

With due apologies to anyone who has done this....but we went to a wedding yesterday, it was lovely and all, but between the wedding and the time we were allowed in to the dining room to sit and eat, we had waited TWO hours, and with only about five seats knocking about, the guests had been standing up milling about all that time, so when it came for food, my heart SANK when I realised I'd have to go and queue up for it!!
