I have to plan my ds1's party and need some ideas for party food that don't involve cheese as the vegetarian who is coming doesn't like cheese.

He is 5 so apart from jam sandwiches (he doesn't like marmite either) can you give me some ideas please. The other vegetarians coming will eat cheese so I have loads of ideas for them.

peanut butter sandwiches

Aitch · 11/03/2008 17:30

guacamole? hummous? salsa? dippy things like veg and crisps?

Fillyjonk · 11/03/2008 17:30

falafel

quorn sausages

does he eat egg? Egg mayo sandwiches always went down well at my DCs' parties. But you know what, you could bust a gut and still hit on something he doesn't like (been there!) Why not ask his Mum what she makes for his parties?

shelleylou · 11/03/2008 17:45

red pepper pita bread with dips,

BCLass · 11/03/2008 17:47

stuffed vineleaves (you can buy them, no need to make your own)

Samosas (again buy them you can get fairly bland ones)

Carrot and hummous sandwiches or salad and hummous (or roated red pepper hummous and salad)

Avocado and salad sandwiches

Vegetarian pate with or without salad - eg mushroom

You can make tofu 'quiches' but might be too much of a faff?

GooseyLoosey · 11/03/2008 17:47

carrot and cucumber sticks, they go down well with most children IME. Hummous sandwiches also good. I often chop up a melon or 2 at the dc's parties as well - it always disappears fast.

colditz · 11/03/2008 17:48

Crisps? Cake? ice cream? vege sausages on sticks?

Childrens' party food, in other words!

don't bust a gut - they don't eat it anyway.

summersun06 · 11/03/2008 17:51

you can get quorn chicken, turkey, beef slices

but i wouldnt worry they never eat much anyway, other than cake

colditz · 11/03/2008 17:55

I would honestly make little rolls with some vegetarian ham or similar and just serve normal party food made with vege substitutes where appropriate. don't forget jelly is not normally ok for vegetarian diets.

beautifuldays · 11/03/2008 17:57

humous and veg sticks
you can get vege mini sausage rolls in supermarket too

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 11/03/2008 17:59

Pitta pockets that can be filled with dips and veg.

TheFallenMadonna · 11/03/2008 18:00

If he's 5 won't he just eat crisps and icing?

At dd's 4th birthday party, I served the sandwiches, crisps, carrot sticks etc first. One boy took a handful of crisps and then looked expectantly at the cakes on the side. I asked him if he wanted a sandwich first and and he looked at me with utter disgust and said "But I thought this was a party".

BCLass · 11/03/2008 18:04

you can get vege gel which is not geletine based, seaweed based iirc, but seems to take a bit more setting than regular jelly.

Thanks everyone there are some good ideas in there, I am doing the usual party food, but just needed some fresh input.

It is a family party so I tend to go heavy on the savoury stuff as there are adults too but obviously I do make brownies, fairy cakes etc

I feel like I just trot out the same stuff every year so wanted to try to do something a bit different.

Many thanks.

Onion bhaji?

Quiche?

Aitch · 11/03/2008 21:51

oooh yes, that is a great idea. go indian, get out the gram flour and make pakora etc. it's so easy and you can do them in advance and reheat int he oven.

lovecat · 14/03/2008 17:25

We had quorn nuggets, veg spring rolls (Sainsbos party food, 3 boxes for £5!) and cheese/tomato pizza on the menu at dd's 3rd as most of her guests were veggie - but all the meat eaters loved them too!

KnitterInTheNW · 14/03/2008 17:32

Marmite sarnies?

Also if you're doing jelly, you could get one of those rowntrees ready made pots of jelly for the veggie child. They're set with pectin instead of gelatine.
