Serving cake and cake jars to take home?

Planning my DC’s birthday party and have the most ridiculous conundrum. Is it acceptable to have a cake on display for him to blow out candles on and then little jars with cake inside for guests to take home (or eat at the party if they have time)? The plan would be to not slice or eat the cake at the party. We would then eat the cake with close family the next day (his actual birthday).

Wondering if people will expect to get the cake we had on display. I have been to parties where cake is put in napkins in party bags and I didn’t care which cake it was from.

I just find the cake jars so cute and a nice way for guests to transport cake home. But also want a real cake for his candles.

What’s a cake jar?

Millybob · 16/10/2023 15:56

Does it matter what people think? Especially if they're other people's kids! Also wondering how you extract cake from a cake jar!

MrsKwazi · 16/10/2023 15:57

Just buy a pack of fairy cakes and wrap each in a paper napkin with party bag.

INTERNETEXPL0RER · 16/10/2023 15:58

The kids won’t know or care. Carry the fancy cake into the kitchen. Emerge from the kitchen with pieces of cake cut up on a plate. Skip the jars.

Lots of kids won’t eat sponge cake anyway.

StarlightLime · 16/10/2023 15:58

How old are they?

Colourfulponderings · 16/10/2023 15:59

It’s fine. No one will notice or care. They’ll be too busy having fun.

purplecorkheart · 16/10/2023 16:00

How old are the kids? Do you mean glass jars for the cake. Personally I would just get a cheap cake and serve that at the party.

MaggieFS · 16/10/2023 16:01

Kids won't care, but aren't cake jars hopelessly expensive for what you get? If you're worried about presentation, do a cupcake stand and pop candles in the top of that.

TotallyScouting · 16/10/2023 16:01

I used to do this for my kids as I liked to have everything prepped. I would have a cake to blow out the candles on and one to send home so I wasn’t stressing about having to cut it all up at the end of the party. I don’t think anyone ever even noticed tobe honest!

StarlightLime · 16/10/2023 16:01

I really wouldn't do the jar thing. Cake in a jar isn't just a slice of cake shoved inside a jar, it'll be a crumby, gooey mess.

What kids don't eat sponge cake?!?

PhantomErik · 16/10/2023 16:06

My friend did this at her last party. She had a cake on display for candle blowing out etc & bought the slabs of cake in a loaf shape from the supermarket that she slices & wrapped in napkins before the party.

Aren't all most kid's party cakes made of sponge?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/10/2023 16:09

If my son sees a cake brought out and hears happy birthday being sung, he expects to eat some cake before going home. He wouldn't care if it was the same cake he saw, but he would want some cake.

Also I hate cake jars, but I don't know how others feel about that.

gotomomo · 16/10/2023 16:12

Jars seem a waste of resources compared to a paper napkin.

If you don't want to serve fancy cake just buy a cheap traybake for the kid's party and a packet of napkins. I do think it's rude to display one cake then send different cake home (no issues with cheap party cake though)

MaggieFS · 16/10/2023 16:12

@StarlightLime Well that's what I thought🤷‍♀️

Reallybadidea · 16/10/2023 16:13

Giving kids a glass jar is asking for trouble I think! The time and effort of making them will probably be wasted too. Just cut up a different cake, nobody will care.

HanSB · 16/10/2023 16:22

I think it's a bit odd, just slice the cake and let people eat it there at the party. Children will notice if it's a lovely themed decorated cake. I don't like slices of squashed cake in a party bag for later which children always want to eat in the car ride home! Buy another smaller cake to have with family. Cake jars are just added expense you don't really need and will be more expensive than buying a second smaller cake to share with family

Smartiepants79 · 16/10/2023 16:26

If these are kids under the age of 13 then don’t bother with jars. A complete waste of money.
Giving out different cake is fine.
You can buy individual cardboard boxes for cake portions if your really want to put it in something fancy.

Torganer · 16/10/2023 16:28

Don’t do jars, they look impractical and wasteful. Just buy or make a cake for the party, and slice it there. It doesn’t have to be fancy, the children won’t care - and it’s for them after all!

Meredusoleil · 16/10/2023 16:31

Why don't you buy cake cubes instead? No cutting up needed, but candles can still be put in them. I will see if I can find a link.

Plexie · 16/10/2023 16:43

I've just Googled images of cake jars. Dear god, even some of the commercially-sold ones look completely unappetising. Reminds me of jars of baby food. You need a teaspoon to eat it - perhaps 'trifle' would be a more apt description?

ApologiesandSanctomony · 16/10/2023 16:47

I'd get two cakes, one for you, and one for the party, Colin is very popular around the kids in my dc's school! You could even have the other cake sliced and wrapped in the bags ready. The posher cake with the candles etc. I'd probably just light Colin though.

justjeansandanicetop · 16/10/2023 20:27

I also had to google cake jars.

God no. How ridiculous and a complete waste of resources.

Two cakes though - absolutely standard,

Buy a big generic supermarket cake. Slice, wrap in napkins, put in party bags.

Sing happy birthday with fancy cake. Blow out candles, take it home to eat with family.

Job done.
