Freezing a supermarket cake

Today my sister bought a mario cake from Asda. It's one of those £13 typical kids cakes with the printed picture on icing on the top.
Only problem is today is the 2nd and it's best before is the 5th. My sons birthday party is the 23rd!!!
She assumed it would have a long date as they're so processed but didn't check till after it was purchased.

My question is - can it be saved? If I put it in the freezer, and then defrosted the night before the party will it ruin the cake? Will the icing bleed out and spoil the picture?

I don't want to (nor can I afford to) waste a £13 cake, but I also don't want to wake up on his biethday to find the pictures bled out as he will be CRUSHED!

Help ❤️

Well it won't hurt to try. I don't think the icing will freeze but the sponge would. Hopefully a baker will come along soon!

sponge will be fine. Not sure about the icing. Give it a go I guess?

Buy a cake topper just in case.

The cake would be fine, even iced as long as it isn’t touched as it defrosts. The icing picture wouldn’t be I’m afraid. The colours will bleed as soon as it starts to defrost and water appears. You can buy icing toppers off eBay though to replace it.

Çakes freeze well un-iced but the icing picture won't defrost well I'm afraid. Can you return the cake and buy one again later?

purplemunkey · 02/04/2023 11:34

Yes, I’d imagine as it’s unopened you can return it. Then either buy a longer life one, or buy it again nearer the time.

Thanks all, I'm going to pick it up from my sisters tomorrow and see if they'll accept it back. I don't have the receipt though so can only hope they'll accept it!!!

If all else fails

If you have a printer and cocktail sticks you can make some cake toppers. If the cake spoils you can use them on a cheaper tray bake cake or add more to the cake you have?

Prev cake maker here. Do not freeze with icing , if can't return then I'd leave it in box in cool (not fridge) place . It won't go mouldy Worst that'll happen is cake will be stale so you could make or buy a cheap cake or buns for party bags and eating .
