Friend is 40 soon. She's well off and has expensive tastes to match. She spent at least £100 on me on my 40th. I can't match that, but am prepared to go to £50. For someone with her tastes, this won't go very far tho. a) she pays for her own beauty treatments on a regular basis, so a beauty voucher isn't anything special to her b)I've looked at her regular perfume, way outside my budget c)clothes/ jewellery/handbags etc ditto. Have done the charity gift thing before, and know it really wouldn't go down too well for this special birthday. Coffee table books not her thing. Any ideas anyone?

For a friends anniversary once we got a graphic designer (fortunately I am married to one but I am sure you could find someone with a few photoshop skills) to design a HELLO style magazine cover with pictures of them, their children, etc, and silly HELLO style captions. It was great. If you cant get a designer do a collage with photos and the magazine (the original cut and paste!) and then colour photocopy it, and maybe even get it laminated or framed.

Or you could do the old This Is Your Life style book with photos thru the ages.
