Sweets - anything out there that's just plain sugar?

Does anyone know if there are any sweets / lollipops out there that are JUST plain sugar?

DS (8) has a complex bowel issue and has had a total colectomy (colon removed) and can't eat anything artificial without horrific symptoms.

The closest I've found are these soemods.com/special/hypoallergenic/without-colour//candies-allergy-friendly
but they don't look overly child friendly or particularly inspiring.

He's having a party next week and I just feel so sorry for him never being able to have any of the usual party stuff. I can make cakes, biscuits etc but I've attempted sweets before and it all went horribly wrong. Any ideas??

Try looking in your local chemist for the sweets in the round tin (sorry can’t remember the brand!) they make barley sugars, fruit drops etc which are just sugar and fruit juice no artificial nasties.

Or try foxes glacier fruits and mints (it has been about 5 years since I have had them so do check the packaging in case it’s changed)

What about those stirrers you get for coffee with sugar crystals on sticks? You can get them in whittards or from Amazon, although Amazon only seem to have huge quantities

Can he eat everything if it's natural - ie, fruit, butter, milk? A lot of small local type sweet makers will use fresh natural ingredients rather than preservatives.

Overlookhotel · 05/09/2021 09:21

Like these, would he be ok with natural colourants? www.seasugar.co.uk/collections/handmade-sweets-uk

How about fudge or toffee?

leavesthataregreen · 05/09/2021 09:24

Candyfloss is, so white candyfloss should be OK.

Maybe white marshmallows too? White sugar mice are cute.

You can bake him vanilla cupcakes or just plain sponge if he's sensitive to vanilla, with white icing and use mini toy figures to make them look colourful and interesting.

You are a lovely mum to think of this.

leavesthataregreen · 05/09/2021 09:25

Fudge and toffee are great ideas as PP usggested. you can make your own - just butter, sugar and cream.

Mbear · 05/09/2021 09:25

Is sorbitol and artificial sweetener? Cartwright and Butler have a good selection of ‘traditional’ sweets and don’t seem to have any sweeteners listed, but sorbitol is used as a humectant.

Mbear · 05/09/2021 09:27

Also mr Stanley’s.

WithRosesAroundTheDoor · 05/09/2021 09:27

Maybe not quite what you were thinking but what about those Bear yo-yo things. I think that they are just fruit and my DD just assumes that they are sweets.

MyGrassIsBrowner · 05/09/2021 09:29

What about sugar mice?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/09/2021 09:29

Peppermint creams made with icing sugar and peppermint essence? Home made but quick and easy, ny kids loved making them as toddlers (we rejected the egg white recipes as raw egg with tinies isnt ideal). Or lollies www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=RWJ7NvBrPko

Kendal mint cake, scottish tablet, fudge, sugar mice might work commercially.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/09/2021 09:30

Try traditional sweet makers, I sometimes buy from Ross's ross-of-edinburgh.co.uk/

5zeds · 05/09/2021 09:30

Make toffee apples, fudge, and jelly sweets. All very easy and can be made to look “birthday” amazing.

Sorbitol has laxative properties, and should be avoided like the plague. Anything ending in "itol" is the same.

Vile stuff.

Aldi jelly beans are sugar and the colouring is vegetable. They do two different packs.

RickOShay · 05/09/2021 10:39

Homemade honeycomb?
Fun to make and delicious

WallOfCarrots · 07/09/2021 21:55

Thank you all so much. Really kind and helpful replies, I really appreciate it.

I've just attempted a practice run of a fudge recipe (thank you to the PP who suggested) which is currently cooling down - it smells delicious so I'm hopeful! 🤞
