I need one about 5/6" and one 9/10" any type of sponge would prefer no jam and cream in middle. They must be iced in white icing and be as cheap as possible. Any ideas where I could buy these from?

M&S or Waitrose,or a local bakery who do make to order cakes?

littlelaPainAndTorture · 31/10/2007 12:56

Tesco do them much cheaper than M&S (who are extortionate when it comes to cakes, IMO!)

Thanks I will take a trip to Tescos and have a look I normally do all my shopping online but can't find many whole cakes on any website. Its for my dd's 7th birthday so I don't want to spend a fortune. I already have a back up cake up my sleeve if I can't find what I want. Cook do a rather scrummy chocolate fudge cake for £9.99. I know thats not at all what I asked for but I think my 2 tiered cake may end up costing a fortune.

Why don't you make them yourself? Would probably be cheaper and much nicer! And it's really not difficult.

Would also take you much less time than trudging up and down the high street!

M&S plain white iced cakes are quite reasonably priced(i thought!) they taste yummy too. I think you may struggle to find one with no jam/cream in the middle though. Could you buy the plain sponge then buy some ready made icing? If you have time then a bakers is a good idea. They probably won't charge much for a plain sponge.

oh poo how did i post that twice

littlelapinonholiday · 01/11/2007 08:56

Eddas, I based that on a fruit cake I bought at Tesco the other day for £15 - same size at M&S was £42 !

Of course I can't vouch for the taste (fruit cake - bleugh!)

Eddas · 01/11/2007 09:08

I guess when i was looking at them it was for my wedding and was 5 years ago

Can def vouch for the taste my dd had this rather ott cake for her bday. My dad bought it though, and he works in M&S so gets a discount

I would like to make them myself but am rubbish at icing them nicely, I really don't want them to look naff. Also might end up costing me more as I don't have any cake tins/boards and I'm catering for my great Aunts 80th Birthday party for 25 the day before my dd's pizza making, cake decorating(fairy cakes also bought) and craft party for 14 children!!. I think that get's me out of making the cakes very nicely.

Eddas your link doesn't go to the cake. I'm guessing your dd had the pink fairytale castle, it is so cute.

I don't need the cake until the 2nd Dec so I will get a couple of prices from local bakers. I have just bought the most amazing light up cake stand so it will need something fitting on it.

Dd has now told me she wants chocolate cake for her birthday, so cook it is, we have a branch just up the road £11.99 for a chocolate fudge cake to serve 16 makes my life so much easier. I will just plonk horses on the top and stick a sparkler in it. Don't know why I was stressing so much, it's a kids party!!
Thanks anyway

Dont spend that on a chocolate cake. Go to Sainsbury's and buy a Jane Asher chocolate fudge cake mix £1.99. It is so easy, delicious and never fails. Even buying the cake tins and mix you'll still spend less. Once you,ve done one you will be hooked. This will serve 16 it is huge.
