Parties/celebrations

Whether you're planning a birthday or a hen do, you'll find plenty of ideas for your celebration on our Party forum.

DS has now announced that he'd reallly like a "Star Wars" themed party rather than bowling with a few friends, he offered to sell some of his toys to pay for it!!

I'm now feeling a little bit mean and think I should really put the effort in. He has loads of friend and he didn't want to only invite one or two. However, last year I did him a Scooby Dooby Boo! party for 28 5yr old and I nearly lost the will to live.
So I need some ideas prompto as his birthday is less than 3 weeks away.
Ideas so far:
Dress up (could possibly borrow or hire costumes)
black and silver balloons and decorations etc
Darth Vada pinata (bashed by light sabre)
rockets for table decs
glo bands
flying saucer sweets

but games or entertainment were my downfall last year

I found it really hard to do food, drinks for parents and organise games all at the same time.

What type of entertainment would be good for this type of party ?(will hire the village hall)
Any other space / starwars suggestions much appreciated!!!

awww bless

I know he's very cute and he even said I'll look after all the children so that you can make the food in peace!!
But I'm not sure that 3 weeks (or less) is long enough to put something exciting together for him. My sister said not to bother and keep it simple but he's only 6 once and he probably would hate the iea of a big party as he gets bigger.

can you get a Darth Vada pinata ? that'd be great. you could do lots of theme games based around the characters. ie duck duck goose, but c3po, c3po, r2d2 etc

it's a great idea, the children would love it! mine is star wars mad

amIgoodenough · 26/09/2007 08:21

am assuming the children are 6?...

could do pass parcel with space related treats inside eg: erasers shaped like planets, cheap figarines etc

could ask children to bring something to put into time capsule to bury in garden

could put collage materials out for children to make own space ships etc with

musical planets (cut coloured disks out of card) one less than children, they have to go to planet when music stops

children in teams with simple quiz on star wars with prizes for winning team

Cheap "lightsabres" to run around with?
We did a starwars day once.(May the fourth)
Re-named the party food with starwars-y names, chocolate buns were Bantha droppings etc, dyed the lemonade blue, and had a dome shaped "death star" cake etc. and played all the films in order. This was before the prequels though.

can you do some team games and theme them?

so the transport dried peas by keeping them sucked to the end of a straw (do you know the game I mean?) could be transporting plutonium the only safe way to refuel the rocket ship? - first team to transport 10 peas, one at a time from 1 cup to another a few feet away without dropping on the floor wins

find the hidden jigsaw pieces - print out pic from internet on card and cut op, and assemble jigsaw - first assembled jigsaw wins.

Name each team a star wars character as well

simon says - but Luke Skyalker says...

Some great ideas so far, I'm warming to the idea. Where did you find cheap lightsabres sockmonkey?
I'm not sure that you can buy Darth vada pinata's, I was thinking I could perhaps make one..... or then again ....
Yes most of the children would be 6. I'm not a big star wars fan myself so I'd probably have to sit down and watch the films again so I didn't get shown up with my lack of star wars knowledge. Apparently you can hire the real Star troopers for charity events!! (obviously this wouldn't be a charity event though)

I'm liking the straw and pea idea!!

takes ages, minimal preparation!

could do the balloons over the head to the person behind, then through the legs of tghe next person then over the head...all the way down the line, person at back run to front and start all overf again until everyone in tghe line has ahd a turn at being at the front. Again minimal preparation, teams of 6/8 about right. Not sure how you could make this link to theme though... Could it be Jedi training exercises?

pin the lightsabre on Darth Vader?

Pound shops usually have "space swords" or possibly instore (used to be poundstretcher) sell them I think.

WideWebWitch · 28/09/2007 08:36

Hello, we've done this, was easy!

We:

Made invites with ds's head as a Jedi
photgraphed children as they arrived and dh photoshopped them onto a Jedi so they all went home with a photo of themselves as a Jedi (my dh is v good at this thoguh!)

  • dressed up as Jedis, all brought their light sabers
  • Star Wars music as they arrived
  • Star Wars film on a projector on the wall
  • light saber battles in the park
  • Star wars cake

Forget parents food, for children just do crisps/cakes/sandwiches, they hardly EVER eat it all

If you are anywhere near me and want to borrow jedi/Darth Vader costumes/light sabers then let me know!

WideWebWitch · 28/09/2007 08:37

Would only rec the first 2 if you have a dh who is a) photoshop ace and b) prepared to work under presure to finish them before end ofparty!

jenthehen · 28/09/2007 21:49

Wow everyone thanks for the great ideas. Your party sounds great www. I may have had a reprieve as the latest wish is that he goes to a local playcentre. Although actually, if I'm honest I'm a little dissapointed as I'd spent a good three hours planning this party. I'm going to save all these ideas though and plan earlier to do this for his 7th birthday next year. DH was also excited about it and v keen to dress as Darth Vader!!!

Where are you? If you do go ahead next year Dh has a Darth Vader costume, I have Queen Amidala and dd has a Jar Jar Binks mask. We have two light sabers too, one is the double ended Darth Maul one.

jenthehen · 28/09/2007 22:01

we're in Derbyshire. I did ring the fancy dress shop and they have the costumes but quite pricey at £25 + a night.
