6 year old lockdown birthday ideas

Hi everyone,

My son turns 6 on Saturday. Any ideas 4 fun games or activities we can do as a family of 4? (one 6 year old and one 3 year old).

We are going to have party food, presents and a cake but other than that unsure of how to make it fun and special and different to a normal lockdown day.

Thanks all

My dd is six in a few days as well.

She loves going to cafes (I have trained her well 😁) so I'm going to try and set up a cafe at home with a menu and a till etc to have her birthday tea.

Hopefully the weather will be good and we can get out for a bike ride, she can chose the route.

I have arranged a zoom chat with her two best friends.

Maybe we'll find a film she hasn't seen and have a movie afternoon.

But I'm also after ideas... She was so looking forward to the stuff that we had originally planned and although I've promised we can do it later on in the year, it's just not the same Sad

Hide the presents in various places and make a treasure hunt to find them.
Could you make a bowling alley?
Make a campfire/bbq/bonfire outside and toast marshmallows or have s’mores.

Aww the cafe is a lovely idea 😊 it's so hard isn't it. Because we have been at home for 4 weeks we have been doing lots of movies, bike riding, games, craft, baking etc. trying my best to keep them entertained! Just feels like anything we can do will jusy be another normal day. I was thinking of making it a kind of old school birthday party (games, jelly and ice cream kind of thing) . I thought I could make a pin the tail on the donkey but couldn't think of other party games which could work with only 4 of us. Think I'll take him on a day trip when this is all over to make up for it 😊

Thanks Ricekrispie22 they are great ideas. They loved doing a treasure hunt at Easter so that's brilliant x

Oh I love the treasure hunt idea... Spins it out a bit!

Games that you could play at your party - Pass the parcel
Musical statues / bumps
Or maybe games with a balloon... E.g. A race where you hold it between your knees and try to get to the other end of the room?

We're in the same boat re. baking, movies and bike rides. They are staple activities these days aren't they?! But if she gets to choose the movie and the bike ride route (and not have to compromise with what 9yo ds wants to do) then that might make it feel more like 'her' day.

My niece was 6 last week. Her mum and dad put loads of banners and balloons up while she was in bed and papered the living room door to look like a present so she had to break through.
They had a special breakfast - pancakes with nutella followed by a treasure hunt around the house to find her presents. Some of the clues were tasks that had to be completed to earn the next clue. E.g. build a leggo tower as tall as her little sister, find the odd one out in a jar of coins etc.
Then a couple of hours down time to play with her presents and Skype family etc.
Lunch was a picnic in the garden. Dsis made everyone's lunch in individual lunchboxes just to make it different.
But if time playing in the garden and then off for a walk in the woods. They collected lots of natural things to make art from and played hide and seek.
Home and the kids made their natural art pics while the grown ups made party food.
Party food and cake and then a few games- musical statues, pass the parcel etc.
Then they mugged the new Trolls film on amazon with popcorn.

I got a blow by blow account from dn who seemed to have had an amazing day.

Just realised how long that was but thought that it might help a bit.
I'm sure that your lo will have a fabulous day.

Watched not mugged. I did know where that came from but it made the whole thing sound sinister.

My DS is 6 on Wednesday...

Unfortunately I have to work (key worker) so we only have to morning and evening together but he is looking forward to the following:

  • choosing what to have for his meals
  • two cakes, we got his favourite shop bought one and I'm going to make a nutella one
  • facetiming friends and family
  • decorations up everywhere
  • lots of board games, his favourite thing and some of his presents are new board games

His older sister has made him a lovely voucher for the outing he really wanted to go on, to show we will do that as soon as we can after lockdown.

Cathy1984 · 19/04/2020 12:08

Thank you for your reply sounds great 😊 The voucher is a really good idea 👍 definitely going to do that 👍 x

So just for an update. We booked a bouncy castle 😊🏰 paid for 1 day and are getting to keep it for 3 👍 my son loved it. We also had an old school party lunch with cheese and pineapple, chocolate Fingers, jelly and ice-cream etc. Built some of his new lego and played some garden games. Video calls from family and friends and a chocolate smartie cake (family tradition 😊). Think he had an amazing day despite everything 😊 hope everyone else's celebrations have gone well x
