Birthday party - game ideas / advice needed

We're having a small party soon for our twins who will be 3. This is the first time they've had a 'proper' little party with some of their new friends. Previously, they've had a birthday tea with grandmas etc.

They don't know many children their own age yet, but we have invited about 4or5. The thing is, would you organise the whole thing with games etc at this age, or just leave them to play together with toys? I'm tempted to just leave them to it really, with some party music in case anyone fancies a dance; then of course a birthday tea.

The reason I ask is that they went to a party the other day, and there were a couple of games: pass the parcel, musical statues etc but tbh they didn't really have much idea what all that was about and they seemed to prefer pottering about with the other children.

My older dd had a larger collection of friends at this age and her 3rd b'day was held in one of those soft play areas which I hate, but children seem to adore! What do you think - I want them to have a nice time, but I'm worried they won't if I'm bossing everyone about with games and they don't want it.

i'd do a bit of both. When DS was three we had toys and stuff out, but did pass the parcel and musical bumps too - we also did sleeping lions. Kids who didn't want to join in didn't (we had about 10 altogether). The thing they most enjoyed was dancing tho, we put some music on and they jumped around!

We did pin the tail on the donkey as well as pass the parcel type games. Look at www.partypieces.co.uk for other ideas. TBH I'd have to agree that they're a bit young for loads of games, they'll probably just prefer playing. HTH
