Any birth gift ideas mums?

One of my friends is expecting her first child in a few weeks and I want to give her an original and sweet gift, something she can use now on the baby, but she can keep and cherish as well.
She told me, as a joke, that she is sooo looking forward to getting all those 'lovely' baby outfits she will get. And I can imagine it's much nicer if you can buy your own baby clothes, but now I don't know what to buy. She will probably get enough toys as well.

So my question is, what was your favourite birth gift?

Thanks a lot!

Well since you ask,

about 4 weeks afer the birth for some reason I was a bit down and a delivery of pink roses (with a glass vase to put them in) arrived and it cheered me up loads. They were from a friend who was actually mortified that she'd only just got round to sending a gift but because the almost daily arrival of gifts had dried up after the first 2 weeks it was lovely and nice to have something for me iyswim.

NIce photo album, blanket, growbag?

Hard to say without knowing what she has already bought.

my top tip is to also get something little for the mum, like new mother bath soak or a gorgeous hand cream (elizabeth arden 8 hour hand cream is my fave) i always do that for my friends and it always go down very well.

she will be feeling fat, hormonal, knackered yet happy - and surrounded by presents for the baby. my best present was a voucher for a massage and facial from a family friend, with the promise of her looking after my baby when i booked it.

Thanks for the tips.
I found a website www.happyboxlondon.com and they sell boxes especially made for special occasions. I understand of you that it's important to give the mum something she can enjoy and in most of their baby boxes is something special for the newborn and something for the mum, like scented candles and chocolate drink.
I'm not sure yet which one I'm going to buy, all of them are lovely, but I saw one with body cream and I think that is a really good idea (Thanks amidaiwish )
They will pack the gifts in a box, I can't wait to see the look on her face when she opens it!

I can really recommend this website, I would love to receive any of these boxes.

Thanks again for the replies, they've been really useful!

Wow, they do look lovely, I would have loved to get one of those, and the boxes are lovely to keep momentoes in.
They are very expensive though!Out of my price range, your friend is very lucky.

Hey flipflopper,
Haha, I think my friend is very lucky with me as friend as well She is always there for me though and this is a nice way to show her that I care about her.

Some boxes are a bit expensive, but they have some cheaper ones as well. I think I saw some for 30 pounds, but I thought, as she is such a good friend, and it's only once she gets her first child, it's nice to give her something more luxurious
I think if I would buy one for someone who isn't that close to me I would probably try to find someone to give it together with, so that it's a bit cheaper for both of us.
