Don't have the recipe here, but the buttermilk birthday cake in Nigella's domestic goddess book is good for shaped cake moulds. It also helps with proportions. Does anyone have it to hand? I'm at work unfortunately...

It needs to have equal quantity of butter/sugar and flour. It needs all the butter to stop it from sticking. It's better to over estimate how much mixture you beed and use the left over in fairy cakes.

Oh and icing, buy pre-made roll-out icing. If you've got a sugarcraft store near by, they'll have it, otherwise you can order it from Jane Asher's website. They deliver really quickly, so if you called them and asked them to send the stuff today you might be okay. Their spray on non-stick oil is probably made of all sorts of nasties, but is very effective if the cake tin has lots of funny ridges. Melted apricot jam acts as a sort of glue to stick the icing onto the cake. You need a very clean surface so that you don't get crumbs all over your icing. You can roll out the icing into the shape you need then use a sharp knife to cut the right shape. I suppose you could use baking paper to make stencils, but I've always gone freehand for Barbies ballgown (have 2 dds so am now pretty good at doing glitzy barbies up to the waist in icing). It's actually really good fun to do, as long as you don't have a small sticky monster trying to help!

I wouldn't bother cutting it in half - asking for trouble! Also, it'll be so laden with icing by the time you've covered the top that a bit of plain cake underneath will be a blessed relief!

Good luck!
