Having a lunchtime welcome do for dd celebration for about 30 adults and 15 kids in the summer and trying to work out how much booze I need.

  1. Toast: 1 glass each = is 6 bottles fizz enough?
  2. beer and wine, how do you work out who'll drink what and how much of each you'll need? Will people drink that much at a lunchtime do? Are wine boxes a real no-no?
  3. What should I get in for the kids? They range from tiny up to teenagers.

And has anyone used Majestic? Their prices look great (free delivery) and am tempted by their free glass loan offer.

Don't know why I'm bothering, really... have just discovered am pg so on the wagon!

If people are expecting to drink alcohol, then it's not unreasonable to expect people to bring something....I never go anywhere without asking what I should take, and most of my friends ask same when coming to me. Say "please bring a little of whatever you prefer to drink, just incase I don't have what you like"

Fizz: would work on 6 small glasses per bottle, so 6 bottles would be enough for 30 adults. Consider offering Bucks Fizz, so you can mix with orange juice to make it go further
Beer and wine: do you spend much time socialising with this group - ie can you work out who's likely to drink beer and who wine? I think I'd allow for a couple of drinks each, any more and they should have brought stuff with them! I don't think there's a problem with (good) wine boxes, but you run the risk of being left with half boxes and it's a waste if you're not going to be able to finish them off afterwards (congrats on being pg by the way). I think most supermarkets do glass loans and sale or return arrangements - might be worth asking at Tesco/Sainsburys. The supermarkets tend to have good offers on wine anyway, so even if you buy it without the return arrangement, you can use it another time. Also Costco good for beer/wine and disposable glasses if you or a friend has a card.
If it's a warm day/BBQ type event, I often make a punch. Wine, cider, oj and lemonade is a very basic one. For the smaller children, I'd get several cartons of fruit juice, and have plastic jugs of orange and/or blackcurrant squash, and plain water. Also consider lemonade and coke, bottles of mineral water, large cartons of fruit juice and perhaps a non-alcoholic punch for the older children/non-drinkers.

Majestic are excellent! Particularly if you go instore. V knowledgeable - they also do sale or return so you can overbuy and take it back.

Cava is perfectly acceptable fizz btw - or Pimms with lemonade.

Wine boxes are fine as long as you don't get the cheapest - at parties people tend to drink anything though IME!!!

Majestic also have a online party planning guide which describes how to work out how much booze you need.

Ooh, this is all great - thanks everyone!
Littlelapin - dd1 is nearly 13 months, and was ivf, so I'm somewhat surprised (and chuffed) to be up the duff again. Obviously not thinking about practicalities of having two under two
