Hi there it is my grandads birthday on Sunday and I am looking for something to get him. He doesnt really have any hobbies and spends most of his time at home looking after my very sick gran. At this age it is so difficult to know what to buy, can anyone advise???? Thanks

We got them a massive family photo last year for their anniversary and they have the kids school photos up. Thanks for the suggestion though.

a bird table/or hanging bird feeder?

maisym · 03/06/2007 19:32

does he enjoy tv - some dvds of his fav films & progs?

Kewcumber · 03/06/2007 19:33

I'm afraid I always resort to photos in frmaes too. Do you have a photo of the two of them you could get enlarged and framed eg wedding photo?

mummytosteven · 03/06/2007 19:33

bottle of tipple of choice?

chocolateshoes · 03/06/2007 19:34

food hamper?, audio book? ermmmmm socks? taped messages, jokes & songs etc from your kids? framed drawing by your kids?

kittylette · 03/06/2007 19:34

Does he smoke?/drink?>

engraved silver lighter or whiskey flask? with 'grandad' on or something?

Kewcumber · 03/06/2007 19:34

ah yes booze and food another favorite standby. Hamper from M&S?

WanderingTrolley · 03/06/2007 19:36

You can get a photo put on a cake - I think Tesco or Waitrose do it.

Where did he grow up? What about one of those books of the town in olde photographes?

Or the newspaper from the day they were married? I think WHS do them....

Like the tape idea. I gave him a dvd which I made up for his 80th birthday it was a dvd of his life . He really liked it. Tape from the kids might be a good idea. I wonder if I would have time to put something together. Thanks

(The booze and food suggesters are all welcome to my next birthday party, btw)

Wotz · 03/06/2007 19:41

Something they enjoy now, I agree with fav tipple or a nice meal. I remember my gran's dislike of photo frames and ornaments. Mt grandparents knew life was short and wanted to indulge themselves.
I used to get my gran some bottled guiness when I went to see her, instead of flowers. She was very happy with this.

Shoshable · 03/06/2007 19:46

what about one of those electronic photo frames, going to get one for DF for his birthday he will be 80.

singyswife · 03/06/2007 19:46

Hhhm they dont really enjoy anything together as my gran is soooo sick. I know he loves Brandy but both of his daughters will buy him that. I could cook them a nice meal and we could all have it next weekend. I was trying to do one of those in the year you were born things but cant find enough info. Then I thought about the hamper idea but cant think what to put in it.

i had a trial flight about 15 years ago. It was about 20 minutes and cost £25. One of those experiences you never forget. I bought one for my dh and the pilot that took him up was quite old .
from your post it sounds like he needs something to take him out of himself - a new experience? or a place he would like to visit? friends he would like to see?

Wotz · 03/06/2007 20:48

How would you lie a picture frame with your grandad in it for a birthday present ?

Don't do it..think of something else, pleeeaaaaaseee.
