Christening gift advice please

We are going to a friend's baby's christening next weekend and want to buy them a gift. Any suggestions? When our DDs were christened they got silver items from both sets of grandparents and we asked everyone else to donate to Save the Children instead.( we didn't want lots of money boxes etc) Any hints that don't involve silver moneyboxes, birth certificate scrolls etc. They already have childs bible etc.

If I go to a christening, I just go to a Christan book shop and buy suitable books for children. I'm not really a silver moneybox type of person either. Depends though if you want something that they will keep for ever and remember you every time they look at it or just a nice gift!

Name plate for bedroom door.
Board books on a religious theme - my DC have some lovely ones in the shape of Noah's Ark.
Boxed set or omnibus edition of classic childrens books.
China mug/plate eg Emma Bridgewater not Peter Rabbit!

When ds was christened he had a couple of good gifts, he had an enclosed case of todays currency coins, and Winnie the pooh Royal Doulto crockery.

My DC got the whole beatrix collection in one one hardback book she loves it and we read it most nights. The second DC got the winnie the pooh collection and adores it just as much.
I even bought it for someone elses christening too

Whe DD was born we had some stamps on a special folder thingy, and some wine to cellar - both were lovely (well, we haven't had the wine yet, its for her 18th!)

I have just bought a polo shirt and matching socks from Gap

I got tons of things for dd1 and dd2 that quite frankly have been shoved in a drawer

at least a practical present is usefull imo

As it's a Christening... Christian Aid do "charitable gifts". Was just looking at them myself for the christening of a baby who has everything. You can buy a baby scales, for monitoring child development for £40. FIve midwifery kits are £75 (bit on the steep side probably) and there are tons of "child related" things like supporting teachers etc for less money, depending on what you'd like to spend.
