one wedding i went to had the most lovely thoughtful bride. it was in the US and a lot of people travelled from the UK. In recognition of this she put - in every hotel room (across several hotels) a little welcome pack. It had - homemade brownies in it, maps of the church and reception, tourist info about the local area, an international phone card, and a bag of mini chocolate bars - I thought this was, to use an americam phrase, awesome.

It was a shame that she brought my esteem for her right back down again it by having the ushers at the church door give out not only the order of service but - get this - packets of TISSUES. with a little picture of a bride and groom on them. be afraid. they'll hit the UK soon.

hatwoman · 20/04/2007 17:37

I also went to a wedding that had bespoke matching umbrellas - not just white ones, ones specifically made to match

NomDePlume · 20/04/2007 17:38

Thank you

DrNortherner · 20/04/2007 17:46

Whe I worked in hotels I was a wedding co-ordinator. I saw some naffola things. Lots of the couples are divorced now!

Once did a tee total couple they were in some sort of sect. They had bangers n mash, Shloer and no disco. Just 30 people around a piano.

They had a ball though.

Lottery tickets as favours are good.

HEIFER · 20/04/2007 18:03

Cod - your comment re kids party - yep the couple were in their early 20s and most of the guests (including us) were hockey club members...

So yes you could be right..

But it was a blast.

LadyMacbeth · 20/04/2007 18:21

Someone I know is spending four large on her wedding dress. four feckin' large.

Tommy · 20/04/2007 18:35

lol at the made up jobs for people. At our wedding, the ushers were indeed children and my god son (aged 4) literally dragged my Mum down the aisle and then shoved her into her pew.

Wish I'd been there to see it

We had tins of celebrations and mini heroes instead of favours although I will cofess to having cameras on the tables. My cousin's partner used his to take pictures of his dinner and loads of the official photographer why by then end, thought he had a stalker

Washersaurus · 20/04/2007 19:16

SlightlyMadSecret are you having a larf at my expense?? My wedding was truely tasteful - I'll have you know it was cherry lips, marshmallow toadstools, haribo hearts, and various pink and white coloured jelly bellies

I did get a touch of the bridezilla - I NEVER would have thought I'd end up in a ball gown fgs - its those dress shops they alter you mind

Scootergirl · 20/04/2007 19:26

My mumzilla told me in a strop that she didn't see why we were bothering to get married if we weren't going to do it properly.
I'd only said there was no way I was having sugared almonds in bags

However, we did end up getting married, controversial as it was, and everyone got a packet of Love Hearts instead

PavlovtheCat · 20/04/2007 22:42

I love this thread! I am planning my wedding right now, and this is great! It makes me feel good about my wedding! I am getting married in a cave and having a BBQ in the huge beautiful rustic country garden of a cornish cottage we rented out for our honeymoon. I paid for it today. We are having happy hog sausages, people jamming on guitars and NO wedding favours, other than for my new DH . I am going to pile up cushions and throws, hold out my champagne glass to be topped up and do nothing much else, apart from whisper sweet nothings to my DH!

I got myself into a right ol state about doing something traditional, worried about what people expect from a wedding like all the frilly stuff, presents, and I became very worried about getting married at all.

Now, with no favours, and the rest, I am sooooo excited!

Astrophe · 20/04/2007 22:47

Pavlov your wedding sounds gorgeous!

PavlovtheCat · 20/04/2007 22:51

Thanks Astrophe! Oh, and today in Sainsburys, I bought 8 solar powered garden lamps for £20!, that sorts the lighting out, well that and tealights in jam jars!!

Astrophe · 20/04/2007 22:56

lovely! A friend had a garden party (evening) for her engagement and they had tealights in brown paper bags. They put a few inches of sand in the bottom then rolled down the side of the bag until it was about 4 inches high and put the tealight in. It looked wonderful, as the brown bags sort of glowed gold. They had them lined up to make a path as you came into the garden. Also, I like those huge garden candles you can get. We used to have citronella ones in our garden at home, which kep the mozzies away.

I hope you have a ball, it sounds so relaxing and wonderful!

PavlovtheCat · 20/04/2007 23:00

They are called Faralitas (sp), from Mexico. They are wonderful to see, DP's mother lives in new mexico and they put them along the drives and around the tops of houses (well, now they are actually real lights but used to be lanterns), at xmas/new year.
They are very beautiful.
Those candles - I almost bought a few of thoe too in Sainsburys, they had huge blue ones with citronella, good idea as there are two ponds and thus likely midges, but they were £6.00 each, so got the solar lights this week, and 200 tealights, next time will get some of those candles!

Hathor · 20/04/2007 23:06

This sounds wonderful. I cannot bear weddings, but I want to come to yours. The cave and lights sound so beautiful.

Moomin · 20/04/2007 23:07

When a friend of mine got married she invited a gay couple who stayed at her house on the wedding night as they'd travelled a long way and were skint. She asked them to take the table cameras home for her at the end of the night. When she got them developed loads of them had 2 or 3 shots from the end of the film of her two mates wearing her underwear and make-up and posing in each room of her house. The were the best photos of the whole lot

PavlovtheCat · 20/04/2007 23:07

lol moomin!!

PavlovtheCat · 20/04/2007 23:09

Hathor, thats what I wanted, did not want a 'traditional' wedding, just not us, and costs a fortune!!

Although...almonds?

PavlovtheCat · 20/04/2007 23:11

Astrophe - faralitas - that bit was for you, its the name of the tealights in paper bags, mexican lanterns....sorry did not seem clear!

Astrophe · 20/04/2007 23:26

thanks,I will sound very learned next time I speak of them

ILoveDolly · 20/04/2007 23:31

OK I am a bit fan of the (slightly spurious) symbolism of things like wedding favours. I know its faff but I luuurrrvvvee it ALL. Besides the reason you have sugared almonds is due to the "bitter" almonds and the "sweet" sugar representing bittersweet married life. so there
