DD1 will be 10 this summer and think I need to start planning now in case I need to book way in advance. Trouble is I'm stumped!! She doesn't want the cinema, we did a pamper party last year and I don't want too many people in the house (mean mummy emoticon!!). So what can we do?

A movie themed thing? At home? Go out for pizza/skating?

Blondilocks · 08/04/2007 19:39

Bowling?

pointydog · 08/04/2007 20:12

dd1 was 10 last summer. Bought argos tent, put in back garden and she had two friends for disposable barbecue and sleepover in tent.

Have you got a garden?

princesscc · 08/04/2007 20:17

Swimming & a pizza?

Polgara2 · 08/04/2007 21:08

www - define movie themed thing please??
She doesn't want bowling (she did that for her 7th - can't repeat anything heaven forbid!!)
Our garden is just soil at the moment unfortunately - dh is mid-transformation .
Had thought of swimming but dd2 can't swim yet and she would hate to be left out.
Not being too fussy am I ladies .

get them a trip in a stretch limo. Don't know how much that costs, mind you.

Age 10 they could eat in pizza hut themselves, Id've thought, and would feel all grown up.

pointydog · 08/04/2007 21:34

pizza express - they make their own pizza. That's good.

Blondilocks · 08/04/2007 21:36

Trip to theme park with a couple of friends?

JanH · 08/04/2007 21:41

netmums has a kids' parties page with local activities.

Pottery painting parties are popular atm I think - is there one of those local to you? An indoor ski place round here does snowy parties (might be a novelty in the summer!) and farm parks/soft play centres/go-kart tracks do birthday parties.

Whereabouts are you, Polgara? (Roughly!) I will have a search for you if you like.

ScummyMummy · 08/04/2007 21:47

Go karting?
Arty crafty type activity?
cinema followed by went down well with my 8 year olds this year and was quite good for frazzled adult nerves as they were all quietly staring at screenful of turtles for most of it

frogs · 08/04/2007 21:58

dd1 (11) and her collection of classmates have between them done:

ice-skating
cookery
bowling
riding (horses)
canoeing
sailing
hanging out in the park with bikes party
sleepovers
crafts
pottery cafe
go-karting
climbing (at local climbing centre)
disco party

Pretty much any sports or activity centre will have a side-line in parties -- it's a nice little earner for them.

pointydog · 08/04/2007 22:04

"hanging out in the park with bikes party"

I like the sound of that one

frogs · 08/04/2007 22:27

'Twas a great success, actually. They were all about 8 or 9. The birthday girl had been given a schmanzy bike, all the others had bikes too but were not old enough to be allowed out on their own. The park had just been refurbished with a new bike track and playground suitable for older kids. The mum took a couple of helpers, packed a serious party picnic, and the girls all did their stuff. Excellent time had by all.

pointydog · 08/04/2007 22:34

new bike track - that does sound good

Polgara2 · 09/04/2007 09:12

Oh wow lots of suggestions - thanks ladies will have a look at them now.

Blakemere Craft Centre in Northwich does birthday parties (or "Party's" ) with a choice of activities including painting pottery (or throwing a pot, that might be fun!), beauty parties (make-up and nails - I know 10 seems too young but they do love it generally), chocolate making or falconry including hands-on flying - the Centre charges £4.95 per child and the activity is charged separately.

fizzpotzz - make your own soap and bath stuff etc - you can just buy a party bucket or you can get a party leader to come to you but they charge mileage (Staffs/Derbyshire looks nearest to you). You would need to do it at home though...

Congleton Leisure Centre does soccer, roller skating and various swimming parties including having an inflatable slide or paddle boats.

Gauntlet Birds of Prey Knutsford

gymnastics parties at Bredbury, near Stockport

Little Chicks baking parties, Holmes Chapel

I will keep looking

JanH · 09/04/2007 11:33

quad bikes at Adlington near Poynton

bowling at South Stockport

more pottery at Sandbach

Chester Zoo

Epic Leisure Centre Ellesmere Port - assorted sports + swimming

Funky Monkeys at Chester do laser parties for older children apparently

Manley Mere at Frodsham do outdoor activities - canoeing, adventure trail , windsurfing - sounds fun!

Runcorn Ski Centre (dry slope, no snow}

starshaker · 09/04/2007 11:36

we have a local craft daft place near here and they do parties. think u pay a set amount and they provided the models paint and food. will prop do this when dd is older. although i took her there for her easter (instead of an egg) and she loved it. shes nearly 2. my sis does befriending and often takes her charge there

JanH · 09/04/2007 11:36

Very helpful website!

JanH · 09/04/2007 11:39

This page even better , divides the area up.

HotXMum · 09/04/2007 11:42

Is she into the Grease thing? Ive heard of a party thing where they come to you and dress the kids up in pink and sink Grease songs and do a bit of a make over. Will keep searching for it.>>>>>>

HotXMum · 09/04/2007 11:50

Cant find the blooming thing. What about hiring a Kareoki machine for them.

Polgara2 · 09/04/2007 13:26

Wow again!!! Thanks again. Sorry keep having to go and attend to RL .
Thanks JanH you are clearly a marvel . Will wade through these now.
HotXmum - grease is a big favourite in our house - hope you find it!
