Party for my 5 year-old

My dd will be 5 in August and I would like to have a party for her. I'd like something a bit different from the ball park thing but I can't think what to do. She's got lots of friends and I live in quite a small house so doing it at home isn't really an option. We've had a tough year and I want to make it a great day for her. Anyone got any ideas?

Do you ahev a nice park near you? If so what about a big picnic with lots of old fashioned egg and spoon races, three legged race, sack race. You could play pass the parcel, pin the tail on the donkey, musical statues, musical bumps etc etc.

The picnic could be done in those nice cardboard lunch boxes.

Alternatively why not look at hring a hall - if you get a big enough one you could have a bouncy castle. Or maybe a good magician or entertainer. You could also think of a theme - price and princesses, little mermaid etc - if you wanted to and get the children to dress up.

Hope you find something you like - it sounds like you all deserve a bit of fun!

those childrens farms do kids parties, and there is usually a play area...
or a swimming pool party (need adults too though)
or take them to theatre show (but that would have to be just a few of them- cost too much)
or seeing as it is August and theoretically should be nice weather day out at seaside.
I am sure whatever you do though she will love it.. just as long as her mates are there and they can have fun!

Thank you both. I like the idea of the park and the farm, both of which I have quite close to me. She would love a princess or fairy theme too but she's got a few frinds who are boys - I don't think they would want to wear pink dresses! Thanks again, you've given me some things to think about.

Ineedchocolate, you could do princesses and superheroes as a theme (that's what dd is having for her fifth birthday party in July!).

gglimpopo, c'est PARCE que tu es en France en ce moment, peut-etre...sorry. Have been mulling over for past few days if I can pass short but precocious ds aged 4.75 years as stumpy teenager for exchange, but think probably not. Boo.
Ineedchocolate, many five year old boys are still up for dressing as elves or wizards...or dragons. Or superheroes.
Five year olds also like pinatas - decorated cardboard containers filled with teeny toys and sweeties. It's hung from a tree and bashed with a stick or rounders bat until all the goodies cascade out.

Thanks very much everyone - a lot of things there I hadn't thought of. I like the breakfast and cinema idea - I'll have to see whats on in August. Does anyone know if there are any restrictions with having a party in a park like you suggest soapbox? My ex has got a really nice grassy area just behind where he lives - I wonder if I could do something there?

i posted a similar request in february for my ds1. one wise mumsnetter said: 'why don't you ask him?'well, i did and he said he wanted to go on a boat. we hired a boat(telephoned my local tourist info) £30 for 2 and a half hours, got 12 of his friends over, pirate hats, balloons, picnic and walk. we had such a lovely day. at this age i would stress you don't need loads of kids - they can get overwhelmed, and it is their day so i would just ask her and take it from there.

We are going to a Hawaiian 5th party. Lots of hula hula stuff in the shops at the moment.
