Hi All, Hope everyone had a good new year. I am worried about my ds bday. Last year I had a small party with friends, cake etc and it went so well, I was so chuffed but this year things are different. People have moved away so there is noone to have a party with. Family live away (Mum is coming down but husband is away-Navy). I am skint from Xmas and really want to mark the occasion for ds to be happy and enjoy his day. Any ideas?

How about taking him somewhere he loves? If you live near London how about the science museum as it's free. My ds (2 in a few weeks) loves it there. OR have you got any soft play areas near you, maybe take him there, have a good play and some lunch and then come home for pressies and some cake with Grandma?

Yes did think about soft play area. we live in Portsmouth and little boy hasn't been on a train yet, so could be a possibility to take him to science muesuem as well especially with Grandma in tow! Sounds good thanks for your advice danceswithnewboots!

We did softplay thing for DD's 2nd birthday and it was a great success. Took a few friends and then invited them back for cake afterwards.

Think train to London might be a bit much (how long is it?) Might be better to try a shorter journey somewhere so its seen as really special but without the boredom factor

Yes have just mentioned ideas to my Mum and I could tell she thought train was ambitious so will give it some thought-thank you :0

happy birthday to little monkey

we decided against having a party for ds 2nd. i've been to a few and invariably they have been a bit of a nightmare. so we took ds to the pinewoods to see the red squirrels in the morning. and had a cake with candles in the afternoon. i reckon a little outing and his favourite tea is all you need.

cheekymonk · 03/01/2007 16:12

Thank you Mary Millington- helpful and friendly advice

Is there a zoo nearby, also if its a dry day why not have a picnic? No reason to let a bit of cold weather get in the way. My DD loves picnics whatever the weather.

cheekymonk · 05/01/2007 14:52

There is a nature park type thing nearby, I took ds when he was younger and not much of a success but could be now he is older.
Yes picnic is nice idea too. Thanks for suggestions x

Hi Cheekymonk.

How about Leigh Park farm? Maybe that's the one you've been to before? You've also got the gardens & lake on the opposite side of the road.

Or a day out at the beach? My boys can spend a whole day throwing stones in the sea. Then you could take a wander 'round Canoe Lake, and there's the Cumberland House Natural History Museum next door (free entry). I haven't been in there since I was at school, but I do remember dinosaurs etc in there.

There's also a place opposite the buses at The Hard, 'Genesis Expo' I think it's called, that's also free entry. That has a dinosaur in it. I've never been in there myself, but I used to work with someone who took her 2/3 year old ds in almost every week.

Or how looking at the ships? The Dockyard is free to get in, and if he doesn't really enjoy it, there's 'Jolly Jacks', which is a small soft play area inside the cafe down there.

I'll have a think about other places in Pompey, or places that are a short train journey away.

Wow Garfields girl, lots of ideas there- thanks!
You are all such a resourceful bunch, I obviously still have lots to learn!
