What Christmas presents for 18 month old???

DS surviving on a few bits of lego a couple of cars and a bus at the moment.

Want to get him a couple of really good toys for Christmas. He's just got the hang of lego and can sit and concentrate quite happily for a good 30 mins. He's also babbling loads and has a few words. Is obsessed with cars and seemed v keen on DH's spanners and stuff last weekend. He's a proper bloke!

Any good ideas for presents for this age?

Fisher price garage.

Maybe a ELC toy bench (they do one suitable for under 3s)

WOW toys do vehicles - they are sold on Amazon

BonfireNemo1977 · 01/11/2006 13:08

depends how tied you are by age thing but DS loves his bob the builder vehicles..bought them when he was about 18mths, just turned 3 and he still plays with them most days. DD is 10mths and also loves to play with them. Very solid and as yet we havent had any probs with them being younger than the recommendation.

Italianjob - I loved my fisher price garage when I were a lass. Think that could be a good one because it should last him ages. Think I was still brumming around with mine when I was 8. Should have been playing with Sindy but fancied myself as a bit of a mechanic.

Will have a look on Amazon.

Thought about getting him a wooden tool box - think gltc do one.

What about an alphabet jigsaw type thing or am I just being a pushy mum!? I want him to have things that he can play with now, but not be bored of in a weeks time.

I think he'll be way too young for an alpahet jigsaw if you mean one with 26 pieces! Maybe a 1 - 10 numbers one instead?

BonfireNemo1977 · 01/11/2006 13:25

also think to young for alphabet..ds had one but he wasnt interested.

mcnoodle · 01/11/2006 13:27

Will go for stuff he can bash then rather than trying to prep him for academic greatness .

Any other ideas?

shape sorters and peg puzzles, my 18-28month olds couldn't get enough of them.

hovely · 05/11/2006 19:19

he will be just coming into the jigsaw phase in a few months
that tends to last and last, so a few basics would be great.
pictures he recognises rather than the alphabet.
Marks & Spencer do good ones, a box of 4 ranging from 2 to 8 pieces is a good place to start.

DD has just got a Tomy Aquadraw - 19 months and loves it.

WelshBoris · 05/11/2006 19:25

Yeah aquadraw is great

What about some chunky books?

have a look here

WelshBoris · 05/11/2006 19:26

The rocket looks fab, DD had the princess castle last Christmas and still plays with it today.

The tractor, HappyLand stuff is great, wooden toys?

Lots of ideas on the ELC website

treacletart · 05/11/2006 20:32

wooden train set. Thomas, brio, elc, ikea, tesco all interchangeable.

liquidclocks · 05/11/2006 20:41

We started DS on the brio around the same age and have never looked back - tescos do a great starter set for around £10 but also Jesters do loads of train sets as well as single bits of track - much cheaper than 'real' brio - we've got bits of the real stuff too and there really isn't much difference.

Hi Mcnoodle, my ds was 20 months last Christmas and we bought the FP garage and it's been well played with. He also got lots of paint, Playdough and books. Has your ds got a ride-on thing yet? They can be quite good.
