How many layers in pass-the-parcel?

We have about 30 kids coming so can't do one for each child. And do you put a treat in between the layers? It's for a 5th birthday.

I did 10 layers for 16 children. Many more than that takes forever. I put starburst between the layers - if anyone misses out they could always be given a treat anyway.

Alternatively you could do two smaller parcels.

I would do one for each child and then an extra for the prize. Do the last layer in a really distinctive paper so you know it is the prize next iyswim. I also put sweets in each layer too.

fattiemumma · 29/09/2006 22:48

do two parcels that get passed in opposite directions.

i always do 1 layer per child with a small sweetie in between layers.

lemonaid · 29/09/2006 22:48

Agree on the two parcels idea. We used to do that at big parties when I was little.

Gingeme · 29/09/2006 22:48

About 9-11 wrappers and yes a gift or sweety in each wrapper ensures no one leaves empty handed.
30 kids. Good luck!!!Make sur eyou try to get as many different kids as poss to unwrap by keeping a secret eye on them as you turn the music on and off. Or get another adult to nod when....

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 29/09/2006 22:49

not that I necessarily approve but every party I've been to there's a layer per child and a treat for each kid. With a big party you could do 2 or 3 seperate ones - which can either go round one big circle - or get them into 2/3 groups. It does get a bit tricky though trying to stop the music so they all get a turn. the other - probably simpler option - would be to do about 10 layers and just have a bag of treats for all those that didn;t get one.

TinyGang · 29/09/2006 22:54

If they'e very young and it's a big party it can all disintergrate a bit - as I discovered last week.

Two smaller groups playing two games at the same time would work if you have a lot of children, but two parcels going round at once could get confusing I think.

Don't do what I did. I spent ages wrapping the parcel up and then realised I'd been forgetting to put the sweets in the layers. Had to un-wrap it all and start again.

chicaguapa · 30/09/2006 17:55

So it sounds like 10 layers and 2 circles so 2 parcels. I have already bought a Cars jigsaw as it's a Cars themed party but can easily go back and get another. Would rather pay another £4 than the party descend into anarchy!

Like the ideal of Starburst between the layers (still call them Opal Fruits! ). Cheaper than rubbish toys and/ or chocolates. And handy to have a packet for those who didn't open a layer.

Choosing to go with good prizes instead of party bags. DD is already saying it's going to be rubbish as no-one's getting a party bag. I told her that was precisely why I'm not doing them this year.

I still keep reading this as how many lawyers...

hulababy · 30/09/2006 20:15

Agree that I'd do 2 parcels with one layer per child. That was the way it was done at a party we went to this afternoon. And it was made really clear that if it landed on someone who already had a sweet, they passed it to the next child in circle without one to unwrap.

WestCountryLass · 30/09/2006 21:19

I would do 2 parcels of 15 layers each.

We had 30 children at dds 4th birthday party, we done two parcels with 7 layers in each. To be honest I find the kids get bored if they have to wait ages for a game to finish. I had somebody on hand with a big jar of sweets to offer to all the children once the game had finished and everybody seemed happy with that,

Clary · 02/10/2006 16:48

for lots of guests you can always do forfeits - and then just have about 10 - and give a sweet to everyone who plays the game.

I have done this successfully at parties from age 5 upwards.

chicaguapa · 03/10/2006 17:00

Are the forfeits to make it last a bit longer or more interesting for the other children? What form would they take? Hadn't considered doing those.

I do forfeits too - sing a song, act like a frog, hop round the circle, count to 10 in a different language - dependant on age and ability of child. it can both make game last longer, and make it more interesting depending on what you want to do.

Tip for while children arriving - print off some cars themed pics from internet, have crayons available, children can colour in pics while latecomers drift in, and is not a game you have to interrupt. Has worked for me at bigger parties

foxtrottingtotransylvania · 03/10/2006 17:10

Did this at the weekend with dinosaurs theme for 5yr olds, they loved it - dance like dino, lay dino egg, then silly ones, dino brushing teeth etc. Would love some Cars ideas as i too am doing Cars theme for my 4yo in a couple of weeks. Will give it some thought. Printed out the forfeits on PC with a matching picture and stuck a swwet on the paper too. Handed out sweet at the end for anyone who didn't get a go. Heres a good clipart site for cars disneyclipart

foxtrottingtotransylvania · 03/10/2006 17:12

Good idea pandag. i got some plain bags and the boys decorated them when they arrived. Then when they won anything they went straight into the bag.

chicaguapa · 03/10/2006 18:21

The only Cars related game I have got is a treasure hunt for their "book instead of a party bag". I have printed off pictures of Sally to stick to the girls books (wrapped) and McQueen for the boys. Then each child will be given a picture and they'll have to go and look for the present with the same picture stuck to it. This is more of a filler because if I don't have time I'll just hand out the books.

Could do with some suggestions for forfeits please! Can only come up with:

Moo like a cow
Hop on one leg
Make a car noise

I'm not very imaginative and trying to do a million things at once. Thanks.
