Any ideas for a warm, non-violent boy's costume for Halloween?

It's a big deal round here - we live on a new estate with loads of kids and knock on doors with pumpkins outside. I've promised DS (5) that he can go trick or treating this year, and he is excited about dressing up, but now I'm panicking about an outfit. I was just going to get something from a supermarket, but they look too thin for an October night and really scary (he's a sensitive soul!). DH is adamant that he must be something spooky and not just fancy dress - if he was a girl I'd have done a cat or a witch, but I'm not sure he will go for them, what are the more unisex/boyish alternatives?

Any ideas? Or links to shops?

How is a cat not unisex? There are male cats. Dress him as a pumpkin or a ghost. Look on Pinterest, loads of ideas.

ds wore a skeleton onesie last year and put some clothes on underneath for warmth

Orangedaisy · 05/10/2014 21:49

Skeleton. Head to toe in black (tracksuit, gloves etc), then do a skeleton outline on him with white duct/electrical tape. Add naff plastic mask from the pound shop (over a balaclava) and you are non violent, warm and hallowe'eny. Have fun!

StrumpersPlunkett · 05/10/2014 21:50

every year that we have done trick or treating the boys have worn normal clothes underneath the costume.
How about all black with a cape and a witches hat? make him a warlock?

NormHonal · 05/10/2014 21:50

Look for a cosy onesie - monster, dinosaur, etc. M&S and Primark have loads.

Or Batman? Loads of Batman stuff around at the moment.

NormHonal · 05/10/2014 21:50

Am sure M&S have either a skeleton onesie or t-shirt. Possibly glow-in-the-dark.

Gruffalo? Not too scary but a bit monster-ish?

tryingtocatchthewind · 05/10/2014 21:51

I was going to say a bat. Black tracksuit with some extra fabric under the arms as wings or buy the supermarket one and put it over a tracksuit

Groovester · 05/10/2014 21:51

A ghostbuster. Boiler suit with real clothes underneath. There's one on amazon with an inflatable proton pack!

Allalonenow · 05/10/2014 21:52

Do your Witch idea but call him a warlock.

ChishandFips33 · 05/10/2014 21:54

Dracula (doesnt have to be scary) a mummy - wrapping him in lots of bandages (or loo roll!)

Yes to batman! Face paints are cheap at the supermarket (snazaroo are fab!)

What is he normally in to - sometimes you can adapt them to fit the theme

ilovepowerhoop · 05/10/2014 21:56

this is similar

Roseformeplease · 05/10/2014 21:58

Harry Potter? He is a wizard!

CMOTDibbler · 05/10/2014 22:01

When ds was 5 he had a bat costume from Tescos which was like a onesie with fabric between body and arms, and he loves that. It hasn't fitted him for a year, but he's still squished himself into it

Beastofburden · 05/10/2014 22:02

I think bats are less violent than skeletons as long as nobody mentions Ebola

UniS · 05/10/2014 22:05

Ghost?
Skeleton?
Harry potter?
Pumpkin?

BabyStone · 05/10/2014 22:18

a wizard? a cone hat covered in stars and moons, a stick/wand, dark clothes and a cape

Ninja turtle?

ChoochiWoo · 05/10/2014 22:21

Last year my ds was a ninja turtle Grin

in2theblues · 05/10/2014 22:25

Look up 'Grim Granny' my DS still talks about it now. He was older than your DS though.

BabyStone · 06/10/2014 06:55

Zombie- he's normal warm clothes then a layer of clothes that have been ripped/cut up a bit, or creased and dirty, messy hair, face paint to make his face that sort of washed out ill colour (bluey green) and he can walk around groaning Grin

AuntieStella · 06/10/2014 07:00

Cat, bat, pumpkin, wizard.

Or if not raining, mummy (wrap in loo roll).

SWIMTHECHANNEL · 06/10/2014 08:24

Spider

erin99 · 11/10/2014 21:33

Buy a supermarket outfit a couple of sizes big and put it on over normal clothes.

My DC's favourite costume was a pumpkin from the pound shop!

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 21:55

Scooby Doo! DS was toasty in his all in one scooby doo suit last Halloween.
