Would like to do something, but can't decide what!!

Can't decide between a big daytime thing with kids included, a night time party, a small group of friends to dinner, a girls weekend...the list of ideas goes on...

What did you do/will you do? Grin

EATmum - at the moment we've got 3.5yo DS1 and 9 month old DS2 who doesn't ever sleep. We generally fantasise about time to ourselves at the moment! Perhaps closer to the time we'll fancy taking them though!

hired a hall and a dj and had a buffet. There were a few kids (my 2 and my sisters 3 plus a few where the parents couldnt get childcare). A few people dropped out so was quite glad of the extra bodies! It was a joint 40th with dh as his was only a month after mine (his birthday is 2 days after christmas so doesnt normally get a chance to celebrate it much)

Mine next year. Going to Paris for weekend with family and going to have champagne at top of Eiffel Tower!

Party - at home, lots of drinks and dancing, absolutely no kids!

Mintyy · 05/10/2014 22:25

Had a joint party with an old friend - organised by my dh and his dw. We have loads of mutual friends in common and our birthdays are close to each other. It was at a bar in central London. We have food and a disco and about 150 guests iirc. Dh took me to Rome for my present. LOVED being 40, 50 is an entirely different kettle of fish.

Pag, I know what you mean. Not going to happen for us either

I had a house party for my 40th (and long weekend in Barcelona with DH) and another for my 50th - lots of drinking, curry catered by local curry house and dancing till the not so early hours! It took me about 5 days to recover, but it was so worth it!

Went to a friends 50th for afternoon tea in a swanky hotel and on for cocktails, etc afterwards which was great.

RainbowLoom · 06/10/2014 16:34

Want to do them all (well not getting pregnant again though!!!).

Ooh I'm having mine in two weeks time - traditional buffet bash with dancing and cake at a local golf club.....but...also having fireworks as my birthday is 7th November! Really looking forward to it, but have found it quite hard work chasing those RSVPs that didn't!!!!

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2014 08:07

I was really disappointed in my 40th plans. Arranged 2 birthday parties (meals out and these were to accomodate different dates and people's plans) at least 3 people didn't come to them, 1 gave a pathetic excuse.

To be honest most people didn't treat it as a 40th more a normal birthday which was fine by me.

My next big one will be very low key. Or I'll fly somewhere nice.

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2014 08:08

Melawen isn't it a pain chasing RSVPs who don't reply?! surely you send an invite for 5th Nov etc and they reply yes I'm free or no I'm not!

I had a joint party with 2 uni friends in a hotel by the seaside. We had around 100 people and 25 kids there but got childminders for the kids who watched movies while the adults drank themselves silly.

It was very fun. We catered for some of it - champagne to start and wine with a buffet dinner and then had a paying bar. People paid for their own hotel room (£80-120/night) and could stay somewhere cheaper as there were plenty of hostels and B&Bs around.

It was really nice doing it with other people as there was less pressure on you to get numbers up!

Been scratching my head trying to remember what I did. Must have done something. Guess it just wasnt that memorable then!

frankietwospots · 27/10/2014 18:36

I spent mine breastfeeding my 9 day old DS. Not quite what I had intended!

Melawen · 01/11/2014 18:47

superflyhigh I was still chasing people about two or three weeks AFTER the RSVP date!! I've now given up on the last six or seven people! I'm going to have a good time anyway - have just taken delivery of what appears to be a job lot of chocolate balls covered in pink, silver, and purple foil - the party colours!!! Grin

My dh booked a holiday to Rome as i had always wanted to go, it was fantastic, the hotel was across the road from the vatican and it was everything and more that i had hoped for, and the food was amazing!
We had a family party when we came home, I'm just not into big parties.

TheWholeOfTheSpook · 04/11/2014 23:44

I bribed a local wine merchant to come to our house and host a wine tasting party. We go to a local sushi restaurant a lot and they catered for it, and then sent me 2 of their off duty waiting staff to do the work as a birthday present although it probably cost me more in the alcohol they drank It was a brilliant party. At least, what I remember of it!

lauranorder50 · 07/11/2014 05:55

DH took me to the Champagne Region of France. My birthday is in early June. It was perfect. On the actual day of my birthday we went to four champagne houses for a tasting and meals out all day too.
