Use a pudding basin and take the legs of the doll and just wedge her in the top.

Use sugar flowers and jelly diamonds for decorations.

Did this for my DD a few years ago - was a big hit!

KBear · 25/09/2006 13:31

legs OFF the doll!!

tassis · 25/09/2006 13:33

do you have the Nigella book where she gives instructions for this?

if not I can go and look it up for you if you like

my dd is only 11 days old, but I'm definately going to do this for her...got to be easier than the Thomas and Fire Engine I've done for ds!!

southeastastra · 25/09/2006 13:34

yes a pudding basin or pyrex dish

mummydoc · 25/09/2006 13:36

definightly pudding bowl for the cake and then just ram a barbie doll legs first into middle, then roll out ready made royal icing into a round shape , cut out smaller circle in middle and slip over dolls head. the icing falls into folds ( as it a circle) which looks realistically like the full skirt of a balldress - i then used more royal icing to mould bodice to barbie and decorated the lot with siver balls and little icing flowers - it was huge hit but took all day to make!

mummydoc · 25/09/2006 13:37

oh forgot to add then painted white royal icing with edible icing paint to achieve different shades of pink on dress to lok realistic ( ok i am a very competitive mother and a bit of a perfectionist)

LIZS · 25/09/2006 13:40

or use this sort of tin and stick doll in the middle ! I bought some preformed icing flowers from supermarket and stuck on with butter icing.

DarrellRivers · 25/09/2006 13:43

this sounds a bit dumb, but what exactly is a pudding basin ( i have ceramic mixing bowls) but i imagine those are not suitable, what are they made out of?

Do you take the doll's legs off, or shove them into the cake,(thanks for the decoration tips)

ps mummydoc, what type of mummydoc are you?

OP posts:
LIZS · 25/09/2006 13:44

A regular pyrex or ceramic mixing bowl is probably ok.

DarrellRivers · 25/09/2006 13:46

yes i like that baking tin, and i like butter icing slightly better thatn royal icing, thanks

mummydoc · 25/09/2006 13:47

ps leave legs on doll as she will balance better IMO

DarrellRivers · 25/09/2006 13:48

My mum used to make dolly cakes for me when I was little

She used a pudding basin, and made a skirt from marzipan or rollable icing. iirc she modelled the top of the doll from icing too rather than using half a barbie.

DarrellRivers · 25/09/2006 13:55

I think i'll give it a go with the pudding basin (but practice first before the party.)

auntymandy · 25/09/2006 14:00

I use a pudding basin

mummydoc · 25/09/2006 15:21

cheesyfeet am in awe of your mother able to model dolly from icing ( goes off muttering "must improve cake skills and model from icing ...." more muttering " or could just sneak a look at waitrose cake brochure and order one....")

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 25/09/2006 16:07

MIl uses a basin, she was Woman's Own (sugar crafter? OCnfectioner? baker? that sort of theing LOL) of the year a few yea rs back, think she knows what she's doing then LOL!

Someone like Squires Kitchen online would have decorating ideas, but tbh think sugar flowers and maybe those silver ballbearing sweet things would do a treat

Tommy · 25/09/2006 16:21

LOL at this.....I'm so glad I have only boys.....

LIZS · 26/09/2006 13:43

lol Tommy - don't assume you may get off that lightly - have used a basin for Pirate Island and Nemo shaped cakes !

TooTicky · 26/09/2006 13:50

Try a gugelhopf/kugelhopf tin.
