I'm having a family party to welcome ds2, and I'm looking for some party games to play that everyone will enjoy - the age range will be literally 0-90, and there should be around 40 people (and maybe 15 or so kids) at the party which will be in the garden (weather permitting!)
So far I've had the following ideas: a treasure hunt (though not sure what format would be best, how to sort out prizes and make it suitable for different ages); a 'guess the weight of ds2' competition; pin the tail on the donkey; and someone doing face paints.
I'm sure you'll all have some great ideas!

The 'no' game- evreyone gets a homemade necklace upon arrival and no one is allowed to say 'no/know'. Everyone tries to make someone say 'no' if you make them say'no' then you get their necklaces. This can last the duration of the party but the children do tend to get over-excited by it and normal conversation becomes hard! So I'd say something like 'the winner will be announced when the whistle blows' and conclude it after an hour say or as soon as it starts getting out of hand. The winner is the person wearing the most necklaces - usually they all end up in one group going from one neck to another.
This is a standard game at our family get togethers and still goes down well.

We also like quizes, get them off the internet. Have also done guess the baby ..gather together baby photos before the day, number them then blu-tak around the house (don't put them all in one place or it becomes a bit of a scrum). Give everyone an answer sheet.

Teasure hunt type - give each family/couple/group/team a shoe box and a list of 20 things to get, first team to get all items wins. can be things like
£2 coin
gents belt
key
an apple

Is this the sort of thing you mean cos i'm sure some more will come to mind!!

One that we did recently was 'guess the chocolate bar' wrap up lots of different types of chocolate bar and number them - the aim of the game is to recognise ehat the chocolate bar is by touch alone. The person or team that gets the most right wins the chocolate.

You can make mummysurfer's treasure hunt last longer by giving word clues to each item - they have to work out the clue and then find the item.

Do you know anyone on a local PTA or Church Fete committee - they usually have games that are used at their fetes and may let you borrow them for the afternoon.

A quiz is always pretty fun - what about a guess the TV programme intro game - may be able to download some intros from the web. You can include everyone by having tweenies or balamory theme up to things like Poldark or Upstairs Downstairs.

yes they sound great ideas - keep 'em coming! mummysurfer I may be being a bit dim about your treasure hunt - are they supposed to be items people might be carrying on them or are they hidden away somewhere (I'm picturing the fruit bowl being raided and the kitchen drawers being gone through....!)
Quiz is a good idea - we did one at our wedding party. We also did a baby photo display at ds1's welcoming so can't do that again (didn't think to make a quiz of it though, that would have been good!)

Put an upside down basin full of flour, with a plate on top, in the freezer overnight (you need to weigh the top down with something heavy) so that when you turn it out, it stays packed solid. Then put a square of chocolate on the top. People take it in turns to slice some of the flour away with a knife - the person whose slice causes the whole thing to collapse then has to dive in and get the choc with their teeth. Be ready with the camera for the flour face pic!

Give everyone an A5 piece of paper and a felt tip pen. Tell them to put the paper on their head. Describe a simple scene for them to draw using their head as a "table".
Eg - Draw a tree. Put some apples on your tree. Next to your tree, draw a dog. The dog is eating a bone. etc etc. Throw a spanner in the works by adding in something really bizarre (ie Granny).
Prize for the weirdest and prize for the best artwork.

Meant to add - they can't look at their picture till it's finished.
