DD's 2nd birthday is coming up. We are having the party at home and I need to do party bags for the children who will range in age between 1 and 5 and be about half and half girls and boys. Didn't really want to do loads of plastic junk. My idea was one sweet treat, one toy or whatever, a balloon and a piece of birthday cake. Just stuck on ideas for the toy. Don't want to spend too much.

... but don't buy yo-yos. they are a PIA and never work!

Bozza · 02/05/2006 22:44

Thanks moomin - one or two ideas on there. Think the girls (well DD, anyway) would like purses. Not sure about the boys.

Oh yes - got yoyos from parties hanging around all over the place. Grin

think i'd go for the finger monsters, skateboarder or cars, or dinosaurs or the flying saucers for boys. for dd's last party i did notebooks and novelty pencils which seemed to go down well. woolworths did mini spiderman and princess notebooks and pencils

I had DDs 5th birthday at weekend and gave all the partygoers a book - wrapped up as a parcel. Found a shop that sold nice ones - with known authors/stories for 99 p each.

They went down well!

I can't stand party bags - don't like giving them, don't like receiving them .... bah humbug Grin

What I did for DS's birthday last year was do a lucky dip. I got reasonably niceish toys from the $2 Shop (like Poundstretcher I think) - wrapped them in pink for girls, blue for boys and put them in a big plastic box at the door for when they left (shredded newspaper in box for lucky dip effect).
I gave them an empty party bag at the beginning of the party and any prizes (little choc bar or lollipops) from games (pass the parcel etc) went into the bag as and when for them to take home.
All went home happy.

Fridge magnets and stickers?

handlemecarefully · 02/05/2006 23:10

Toys R Us has a party section - with party bag bits and pieces (top quality of course, given that it is toys r us - lol!)

Skribble · 03/05/2006 21:55

I find stationery items like pencils, rubbers, sticker etc work out to be good value.

TBH i wouldn't bother with a balloon but thats just a pet hate of mine, as long as you didn't put bloers or whistles in Grin.

Other ideas for toys.. wooden bracelet, mini puzzle, car, colouring book and mini crayons, mini telescope, compass, magnets. bath duck for the younger ones. Hawkins do a lot of stuff like that, (as do I ....cheeky plug)

Dont spend anything, never done party bags here and only had one complaint( at dds 6th)

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2006 21:59

We just got given one of those push down and pop up things, which were very popular and inspired shrieking :)

Bozza · 03/05/2006 22:01

Thanks everyone. Have realised that I will have to differentiate party bags. What is suitable for a just 1 yo isn't going to be great for a 5yo.

We gave each guest a book, from The Book People.

dd's party this weekend (she's 2) and have different party bags for different age groups and boys and girls.

babies under 2 yr get a stuffed singing barney (which i got from a wholesale type shop), a winnie the pooh bib (also got on the cheap, bought bulk from a warehouse sale), and a cheapo but nice hardboard type ABC kind of book.

2 yr olds also get the barney, a winnie the pooh pad/colouring book, cheapo crayons, a lollipop (also from warehouse sale), raisins

kids aged 3 or 4 and above get lollipop, raisins, a winnie/disney princess/bob the builder/spiderman whatever notebook or colouring book, OR a cheap storybook (preferably under 50p type of thing), crayons, novelty pencils, erasers. u can easily get some bargains at pound shops or woolies i reckon...

i also splurged on disney princess and spiderman wallets. also science-type mags for bigger kids (9-10 yr olds)

also got a whole bag of spiderman figurines for cheap from a pound shop type place...(only for 3 yr and above tho..their heads may come off when bitten by inquisitive toddlers!!!)

also if you like, stickers like pooh, disney princess, etc..woolies do them i think?

i actually spent four months scouting out bargains Blush so got some really cheap deals..i guess if i tried to do everything last minute, i wouldnt have found that many bargains..

oh and i toyed with idea of giving cartoon character toothbrushes (cos they will come in handy!!)

i also know a friend who saved up for her kids' parties things which she got for free when u buy something or things u can get on airlines, like small stuffed toys, keychains etc. obviously helps if u are REALLY on a tight budget.
Smile
