Hiya all,
Its not dd's birthday until September but we have benn discussing what she would like. We've decided that it can't be too expensive because we are having a huge party with about 50 kids. So, she has aked for a pink Mp3 player, although at first she wanted an Mp4 player. This is fine, not too expensive, but I am concerned about direct noise in her ear. Does anyone know if it is dangerous for small children to listen to music through earphones? She won't have it turned up loud.

I wouldn't, think that they are far too young at that age for things like that

Have you thought about getting her the old fashioned over the ear headphones as opposed to the in ear ones you get now? we did this for DS (who's 3.5 so a lot smaller than your DD) as he occasionally likes to listen to music on our ipods whilst in the car. I think these styles don't affect the ear as much. And of course, like you say, make sure it's not turned up loud!

DD has a Leappad so I got her over-head earphones for that. She is small for her age and they just wouldn't stay on, even went to argos bought several pairs and stood at the colletion point trying them on her head. In-ear ones are the only option

do the in-ear ear-phones stay in... my 7 1/2 year olds only just stay in..

Kind of. I have tried mine on her. They are okay if she is relativley still. Does anywhere sell earphones especially for kids?

She wants a what at what age????? And her birthday is when!

I'd like to comment but I'd really better not!

I don't think it is a bad present, although maybe early planning. DD has a children's portable cassette walkman thing and had it before she was 3. She likes to listen to music!

Not sure on the ear thing though. the children's machines have noise limiters in, although makes it virtually impossible to hear if you use them.

dd has a kiddie walkman too, but an MP3 player!!! dd wouldn't even know what one of those was! They store heaps of stuff and can play very loud into your ear, and how the hell would she operate it?

And she tells you what she wants this far in advance? And she has 50 friends! wow.

Hi Rhubarb. Its not that shes got 50 friends, she will be starting school in sept so am going to invite all the class, plus friends from nursery and others. As for planning early- I am a single parent who is studying for a degree. My money is limited to a student loan. If I plan early it means I can budget better. She knows how to operate my Mp3 player, shes quite clever as stuff like that. She can manage the tv, dvd player, and freeview box on her own. Occasionally she even switches the subtitles on so she can see the words.

Would she not then be better with something that isn't another gadget? That encourages her to use her imagination instead of pressing buttons?
I'd opt for a kiddie walkman, I'm pretty sure you can get different sized headphones - look in Mothercare, and something to stimulate her other senses. A party for 50 is quite an expense in itself! Are you sure it's necessary?

zippitippitoes · 31/03/2006 16:29

I think 50 is far too many for a small child's party I would have 10 max and I would get her some other present too..save up between now and then and buy it nearer the time Smile
