Party box food - sound okay?

Off shopping today for the party food. Each child will have a party box and I already know their sandwich and drink choices.

What does this sound like for their boxes:

1 small soft roll with their choice of filling (ham, chicken or veggie cheese)
1 carton/bottle of chosen drink (orange, apple or water)
1 small bag with some salad/veg in - cucumber, peppers, cherry tomato, celery
1 small portion of cheese
1 box of raisins
1 mini chocolate/gingerbread man
1 chocolate crispy bun (if MIL manages to make them!)

Is that enough?

They will take a piece of party cake home, along with their party loot envelope (not bags!) which includes a book, a thank you letter written by Mollie and a small chocolate bar.

There will be nibbles and home made cakes (by my sister) for the grown ups, and hot drinks and juice too. Children can get water drinks throughout party if they wish.

Party food will be eaten sat on picnic blankets, part way through the party.

Children are mainly aged 3 and 4 years, although have 3 six year olds, and 4 babies (only catering for one of the little ones).

Anything I have missed?

I think that's plenty hula = you remeber my dd's party there was so much food that was eaten as they we're all so eagar to go play.

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 08:44

That is what I am thinking - bet they don't eat half of it. Guess if it is in boxes they can always take them home to finish off later!

That sounds lovely, I would be delighted if ds got that sort of food at a party. What about some popular kinds of fruit as well: apple slices and grapes seem to be the favourites.

However some children have very big appetites, especially if they have been running around like loons at a party, so I would take some spare rolls or extra fruit to offer round as well.

GeorginaA · 31/03/2006 08:46

That sounds lovely - can we come Grin

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 08:47

Party is only 1.5 hours long and food will be done in latter part of the party.

Could through some apples into a bag to take with me though, in case. And we can always eat them if they don't.

was avoiding apple slices as they'll brown. Thought about grapes but figured they'd end up being quite expesive to get sufficient for 25 children!

would leave cake out of box and give it to them afterwards

but sounds fab to me Grin... although I would be tempted to have a few crisp-type things somewhere

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 08:49

That is what I am doing - cake goes home with them.

Was wondering if you can buy mini bags of crisps??? Or I could buy some big party bag ones and transfer a handful into a second plastic bag.

They'll be crisp type things about - but they are for the grown ups!

Even 6 grapes each would be fine. Or even one strawberry each! There are some decently priced strawberries coming into the shops now. I am just on a mission at the moment about fruit at parties - I don't see how we can expect our children to view fruit as a yummy treat if it is not offered at parties. :)

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 08:53

We have loads of fruit at home :) Thought I was being good putting in some salad veggies too! And raisins.

Will look what fruit they have in too - could always add them to the salad bags.

Have to say that fruit is normally offered at the parties we ahve been too round here. At DD's party last year at Gymboree we got them to do a buffet tea, and there were loads of strawberriesm grapes, apples, bananas and other fruit. The children ate loads of it.

Yes I was impressed with the salad bits, honest Hulababy :)

I would be totally chuffed if we went to a party and the food was as you describe.

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 08:58

Now got to make sure that I put the right roll and right drink into each box in the morning!!!

Party is at 2:45pm. What is the earliest I can prepare the sandwiches and them still be okay do you reckon?

You can tell that I am new to this whole do it yourself party malarky can't you!!!

Wow, that's excellent, wish half the parties we went to had that in the food box. Last one had : huge sausage or cheese roll, marshmallow cone or huge fairy cake (covered in sticky bits), cheap carton drink, 2 chocolate fingers and that was it - I kid you not!!

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 09:06

I have to remember to collect DD's cake from Waitrose on way home. She has chosen a pink palace Grin

Right, I suppose I really should get on and go shopping!

Thanks for the advice and assurances :)

If you freeze the bread first, then put the butter and fillings on the frozen bread, they are still nice and fresh when you come to eat them.

You may wish to test this first as I have never done it with the fillings you mentioned.

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 13:53

All food is now bought :) There is loads!!!!

So, if party is at 2:45pm tomorrow when is earliest I can prepare the sandwiches? I'll do them tomorrow, just hope they okay for me to do in the morning rather than having everything at the end.

Will do veg after lunch tomorrow so it doesn't dry up too quickly.

The boxes are very sweet - they are in the shape of castles and Mollie loves them :)

Very pleased with her cake too.

Have added a handful of grapes to the veg bags, and a handful of plain crisps in a seperate food bag for the boxes.

I make my DD's packed lunch the night before using frozen bread - or fresh bread but then put the sandwich in the fridge. Could you do them tonight and chuck them in the fridge? Will save time tomorrow when DD is running about in a state of excited giddiness!

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 14:23

Think I will. I'll do the sandwiches and wrap them indivudally in cling film and pop them in the fridge. Then just before going I can throw one in each box - must remember to make sure I tell what each filling is though!

OP posts:
MamaG · 31/03/2006 14:24

When you've wrapped them in cling film, put all the ham ones in one carrier bag etc and write on the bag - easy peasy!

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 14:26

Yes, that makes sense! So why isn't my brain working so efficiently!!! Ah, that'll the raging head cold and bad throat I am desperately ignoring as have this party to sort out. Trying to make lunch last as long as possible so I don't feel guilty being on here :)

OP posts:
MamaG · 31/03/2006 14:29

I've got the raging head cold & bad throat (and chest infection to nur nur) BUT I don't have a party to organise!

Hope it goes well :)

moondog · 31/03/2006 14:29

Hula, food sounds great but what is that thank you letter all about?
If it is to thank for gifts received, then it is completely meaningless as when written, the gift will not have been received...

?????

Hulababy · 31/03/2006 14:29

Thanks :)

Best go sort out the party envelope/bag things now!
