Is it normal for your child not to get a piece of the birthday cake at parties these days??

DS1 was at a 5th birthday party yesterday and in the party bags the kids all got at the end of the party was the usual novelty stuff, but not a piece of the birthday cake?? Is this normal etiquette when at a childrens' birthday party? I understand there was one for blowing out the candles at the end for the photos, but was a bit baffled when we got home and noticed there was no birthday cake in the bag.

New to all this stuff, and planning to arrange DS1 6th birthday party next year.

I have always had and given cake in the party bags.

I know some people have a cake for the candles and then a 'sharing cake' to give to guests.

Maybe they are just super tight! Wink

They usually eat the cake at the party, and the party bag is full of tat and lollipops.

BonkeyMollocks · 19/08/2012 19:07

Ahhh yes maybe thats it!

Still tight imo Grin

I do small "blowing out cake" at the party and a larger one that I cut and put in the party bags before hand.

I don't think that makes me tight, especially.

usualsuspect · 19/08/2012 19:08

I always put the cake in the bags.

You sometimes do, sometimes don't - fine either way I think.

Thanks folks :) The candles were blown out at the end by the birthday boy and all sang him happy birthday (you know, the usual) but then the cake was whisked away (was in a community hall, btw). It wasn't cut up and shared out amongst everyone. Strangely enough, the last party was like this (another of DS1's nursery friends a few months ago). It just struck me as a bit odd. I can now see that obviously they needed one for the photos at the end when birthday boy was blowing out his candles and everyone at the party was watching but isn't the whole point of going to a party involve getting a slice of cake?

I would have been well annoyed with no cake in the party bags my DCs bought home. They weren't keen on birthday cake so I used to eat it.

lovechoc · 19/08/2012 19:14

I would have liked to taste it, usualsuspect! Wink

DD went to a party recently and the party bag had some lovely goodies in it - but no sweets or cake at all. I understand now how the birthdays girls Mum is so slim now...

coffeeandwine · 19/08/2012 19:17

Most parties mine have been to have cake. However, every now and then there just seems to a cake for blowing out candles/ singing around. When this happens , DA2 gets especially upset. The only reason he goes to the parties is for the cake. Grin

"I insist that cake is served to be eaten at the party."

That made me smile smalltown

I am glad I am not the only one who takes cake seriously Wink

Maybe they use fake cakes now a days.

usualsuspect · 19/08/2012 19:22

Like the ones on Big fat Gypsy wedding, made out of polystyrene Grin

RubyrooUK · 19/08/2012 19:22

I've never had cake in a party bag. The parties DS has been at, we've all just stuffed it down our gullets long before the end of the bash.

But it is a bit weird not getting any cake at a party OR in the bag. I would not be happy at all. Smile

lovechoc · 19/08/2012 19:23

Am actually beginning to wonder although I was told it was home-made...

I will be making a real effort next year to make sure each child goes home with cake or has a slice at DS1's party. I just cannot imagine not getting a slice of cake at a birthday party, very very strange!

We always get cake in party bags (and it always goes straight on the bird table or in the bin).

usualsuspect · 19/08/2012 19:26

Why does it go in the bin? what a bloody waste of cake.

LynetteScavo · 19/08/2012 19:28

It's not normal, but hosting a party, cutting up cake, wrapping it in a napkin, entertaining children and answering the door to parents comming to collect....I can see how it happens.

I even forgot the cake until most people had left at DDs first birthday! Blush

I have know people have to cakes...one which is already cut and placed in the party bags. Very wise.

LynetteScavo · 19/08/2012 19:29

I have known people to have two cakes.

StealthPolarBear · 19/08/2012 19:32

We do one or the other - and if they get cake that's welded to the napkin you just pick it off :o
