My Grandfather will be 90 in June. He lives in France and is holding a big party to celebrate his new young age! What on earth do I get him? He has everything he wants! I want to find something very special and meaningful but I'm lacking on thought at the moment so thought someone could kick start it for me....!?!

Magazine subscription to something he is interested in? Gardening? French life?

Thanks for that - 006, I like the idea of a World Vision Gift, I will definitely look into that but I don't think he would get the full gist of it so I'd have to get something else to go with it. The magazine subscription is good but his eyesight isn't so great so I think he would struggle more than finding it enjoyable. They would definitely become a firm favourite for his weekly coffee morning gang!

my dh's grandparents who are in their eighties have told us all that they have everything they want and need and if they don't have it, they don't need it.therefore they like us to get them things that they can enjoy straight away like champagne, chocolates, posh foods etc.then they eat it ,enjoy it and bin the package.
at that age- i think its a good philosophy!

PandaG · 20/02/2006 18:11

How about a really good picture of all the family? Or maybe arrange for a photographer to be at the party to record the event - or someone who is handy with a videocamera to film it- not a present as such but something to remember the day with. When my gran was 90 last year I gave her a decent photo of the great grandkids, made her a special cake, but her favourite present was the whole family being together.

helsi · 20/02/2006 18:16

does he like books? subscription to a talking book series perhaps?

is he mobile? does he like wine etc? tour and wine tasting around a vineyard

a family portrait is a good idea

Readers Digest comes on tape

So do some other magazines

Or a book on tape/cd

tamum · 20/02/2006 18:25

Newspaper from the day he was born?

cupcakes · 20/02/2006 18:27

soft centered chocs - it what we alsways get dh's 90+ grandparents.
That and sherry. We're so unoriginal but it's what they like. That and framed photos of the children for their glory shelf.

larlylou · 20/02/2006 18:33

Gosh, thanks for the help - plenty of great ideas to get me going! I think the Great Grandchildren photo will be a nice thing. He loves wine but has his own wine store and is quite specific so I wouldn't even go there! He recently lost his wife so he's a bit of a lost sole at the moment so he will absolutely love just having all his family around him so that in itself is a great gift! My brother is flying over from Sydney to cater for it which he is so excited about (well, both of them are!). It should be a great weekend and I'm sure any gift I get he will appreciate...now its just finding that right one!

or what about a photo album with loads of pictures from across the years?

geogteach · 20/02/2006 19:23

My grandmother was 90 at christmas, I got a frame with 3 holes and photos of each of my kids her great grand kids - she was delighted.

stitch · 20/02/2006 19:27

what about a cd of some music from his youth?

stitch · 20/02/2006 19:28

or a poster of his fav flim star?

Littlefish · 20/02/2006 19:30

My parents had their 50th wedding anniversary recently. I e-mailed lots of their friends and asked them to send me photos of my parents from the last 50 years. I scanned them all in, and made a book which everyone at the party then signed and added messages to. It took a bit of time, but was a wonderful gift.

sammac · 20/02/2006 19:36

My gran was 90 last year and she enjoyed getting a photo frame into which she has put photos from her party. She really liked a 3 tiered one whith pictures of her children, next layer down, the grandchildren, final layer the great grandchildren. The other photo which she loves is one of her in her party tiara and all the '90' badges! I think she enjoyed the fact that the family was all together, having fun, having travelled from all over the place and it was all for her. She'll be 91 in 6 weeks!

larlylou · 20/02/2006 20:25

Littlefish, I love that idea. That is definitely something I'm going to try and do.
