Having a party for dh's 40th and have got a mix of music for the dancing:
cheesy (jackson 5, sheena easton, mc hammer, etc)
80s lite (haircut 100, abc, yazoo)
80s alternative (cure, smiths etc)
up to date alternative (kaiser chiefs, killers, arctic monkeys etc)

best to keep in separate sections like above or mix it all up in the hope everyone will carry on dancing?

I would do sections if I were you. Start with modern stuff and head back through the decades. By the time you get back to Chic and Sister Sledge everyone will be on the dancefloor singing along.

I'm forty in April too. (Tremble)

from experience with this particular set of people they need very little encouragement to dance and will get going fairly early

'Careless Whisper' at the end of the night is always a floor filler. IME.

i'm happy with all the music i've got, i've spent DONKEYS getting it all together. i just need to decide on an order now. we're having an hour of dancing before the food, then an 'entertainment slot' after food (don't ask) then dancing til end which should be about hour and half at most, ending with everyone shouting along to american pie
