Any ideas for celebrating Nov 5th with small children (too young for fireworks)?

DCs are 4.10 and 2.10. We live in London, our nearest display would be Ally Pally but I think they are too young and more likely to just get scared. Probably too young for sparklers as well(?)

Any ideas how else we could mark the occasion or maybe just leave it until they're older?

Get some sparklers and you light and hold them - go into the garden in the dark and wave them about - will still look pretty cool. Or go for a walk in the dark to your nearest park, with torches, and take the sparklers (again, you use them). Going out in the dark can be quite exciting by itself.

Places often have children's fireworks at 6pm or 6:30pm - that might be an idea?

We took my DD to her first fireworks last year when she was 2.5 and she wasn't a bit scared - she loved it and was still talking about it months later. We just explained all about what would happen, and held her up during the display itself, and I just think it didn't occur to her to be frightened. It was our town's main children's display (but still pretty big and impressive actually) at 6:15pm in our local big park. Planning to take her and DD2 (5 months) again this Saturday.

have you got a garden?
if so you could have a little bonfire.

my youngest dc are 4.2 and 2.2 - we're going to a friends for bonfire, hotdogs, sparklers and small pack of fireworks. life in the fast lane.
might go really wild and let them toast a few marshmallows.

I think you might be surprised. Took my DC to a firework display last weekend. My youngest is 2,5 and there were plenty of other little ones there too.

Admitedly my little one wasn't terribly keen but he lasted the display. My friends DS though loved it and he is only just 2. Smile

We've taken our since they were babies - got a pair of ear defenders for them (eBay) and they've always been fine. It's the bangs that are scary I think. They love fireworks (so do I!) but we can't make any displays this year :(

Thanks everyone, you have convinced me to take them to a display. Turns out Ally Pally isn't on this year and neither is Victoria Park so we are going on Sunday to this

Wish me luck!
