Experienced Hostesses - Need Your Top Party Tips

Believe it or not, I'm finally giving my very first adult party tonight! Immediate and extended family are invited over for Christmas Eve supper. There will be 18 adults and 5 children under 5.

I think most everything is ready - house decorated, tables set, glasses/plates laid out and ready, wine chosen, all food done (catered! ), Christmas music on the stereo, flowers in vases, etc.

What I'm after is top tips from all you experienced party givers about what makes a successful party. Obviously, there are the physical preparations - which which I think are covered. But, once the basic practicalities are out of the way, what extra elements make for a good party to create a good atmosphere where people will have fun and enjoy themselves? What's the secret of being a good hostess? I'm inexperienced at giving parties, so don't do it instinctively.

Top tips much appreciated......besides copious amounts of good wine.......

How did it go?

I think the only advice I could give is to be relaxed and even if the kids knock something over or something doesn't go to plan then take it on the chin and smile!

GKWCL - Party went fine, thanks. The house looked beautiful, atmosphere was good with dimmed lights and holiday music, food was great, and people seemed to enjoy themselves.

Must confess, I was surprised by two things - people didn't drink much (I've got enough wine left for another party!), and nothing was spilled (really expected this with all the manic activity). A minor gripe: I didn't have much chance for a real conversation as I was busy looking after everyone, but that's to be expected I suppose.

Tonight I've just finishing putting away all clean wineglasses, dishes, vases, platters, and all those extra bits and pieces that are rarely used. Giving a party is alot of work!

Now, I'm preparing for the next holiday phase: houseguests that fly in tomorrow at 10 AM. Luckily, it's one of my dearest friends, so she'll completely understand if the house isn't pristine....which it won't be!

Sounds like it went beautofully

I think the first few times you do a party it is hard work but once you are a seasoned pro it seems easier, or you worry less and enjoy it more.

I know what you mean about not having time to chat to people, it is a shame but thems the breaks when you're the hostes with the mostest!
