nightynight - I was being a bit flippant.

I guess my point was that I don't like the consumerism thing either, but I do like the big family meal, the crackers (think I'll make some), the decorations etc.

I hope you can sort something out stitch.

I agree with the not going trick or treating though, have to say. we were never allowed to do that and aren't damaged by it.

well, thing is i do sort of agree with the trick or treating being begging thing. which was why i was happy to go along with him. as it was, the kids ended up having a brilliant time coz everyone came to us. and we gave them stuff, so was actually lots more under our control.
thing is, we do have a big meal at mil house at eid. and apart from him, none of us enjoys it. i mena the kids and me. we are there coz we have tobe. the food is awful, in our opinion, but he thinks its wonderful. etc etc.

Stitch I think as you are a parent of children being brought up in a multicultural society you have every right to insist that you have a tree in your house. Yes Christmas in this country has been overtaken by crass commercialism BUT the real message of Christmas is peace and goodwill to all men and that has to be a worthwhile lesson for our children to learn. I don't know where your husbands family are from but I would know that if I was living immersed in a foreign culture I would want my children to experience the nicest bits of the culture. Get a tree - even if it's a small one.
And I think you should change your name to StitchSavesChristmas
