Impressive store bought birthday cakes?

Let's just say before I start this thread, I am not making dd's cake.

Right, so last year she had the Waitrose Barbie Doll cake, which was amazing and actually quite impressive. The sponge inside was also delicious. Obviously we can't do that again, and I'm not sure about any of the others on the Waitrose website. Anywhere else other than Waitrose and M & S that I can try?

Has anyone had any of the cakes from M & S?

Dd is 4, btw, very girly.

TIA

This is a mate of mine in Essex, I'm sure there are people near you if that's not local enough Wink

She did a gorgeous carrot cake for DP's birthday earlier in the year (and is an infrequent MNer)

We always get Colin the Caterpillar from M&S, the lack of girlyness is made up for by the cake - I even had one for my birthday!

We got our christening cake from M&S and it was lovely, and quite a bit cheaper than Waitrose (though I love Waitrose cakes, our wedding cake came from there and it was yum!).

I suspect I'll carry on buying off-the-shelf Sainsburys ones for DS's birthdays though. They're fine IMO.

Look in the yellow pages for a local cake maker. Also ask friends and family if they can recommend someone. It's bound to be cheaper than a supermarket.

I have had various M&S cakes. They do not taste home made, but imo are fairly reasonable. (better than some of the ones tesco, asda etc sell)
Last one we had was the hello kitty one. :)

Greenhalgh's

Cake from Sainsbo's and Asda is ick IMO.

Nothing wrong with buying it, looks lovely, but it is not nice cake, dry and pappy.

FWIW I don't actually think it matters to most people Smile

Colin the Catipillar is still my fave!! :)
Try dunns. They do the best cakes :)
