Party food for 9yo's party - would you cheat?

DD is having a climbing party for her 9th birthday in April. There will be up to 15 girls, all the same age.

The clibing centre doesn't cater bt do have a small room we can use. There is no room for putting food out though - so has to be very contained. We will also only have up to half an hour for eating afterwards. They are likely to be ravenous aftertwo hours of bouldering and climbing.

My original intention was to give each a food bag/box, each with a sandwich and juice carton, and then prob some crisps or fruit bag.

Cake will be cut and served at the end.

However DH reckons we could cheat. There is a Macdonalds round the corner. He thinks it would be far less hassle to take orders as the girls arrive and then do an advance order with MaccyDs for 15 Happy Meals and then collect it just before they finish climbing - so they all get something warm and a bit more substantial to eat, plus a drink, after their climbing.

But it is MaccyDs, a MN ^favourite Wink

What do you reckon? Would you cheat and make it less hassle for yourself, despite it being MaccyDs?

sounds like a great plan

Remembering what my two were like at 9 years old......they could eat for England!!

A burger, chips and drink sound fine, if they are still hungry they will eat when they get home. I always over cater at parties (prob because I like party food, I just pretend it's for the children!) Smile

pointydog · 27/02/2011 10:59

I don't consider it cheating. It's just saving yourself time.

If you want to save time and provide something that the kids will be very happy with, then of course just do it.

pointydog · 27/02/2011 11:00

It's a party. No one expects a hearty meal. If they're still hungry they can stuff their faces at home.

Hulababy · 27/02/2011 11:04

That's what I was thinking pointydog. They can still go home and have some supper before bed if still hungry.

We will be heading home after with parents so DD will probably get something more anyway with us and them.

McDonalds! Save yourself the hassle and if financially it makes little or no difference then definitely go for it. Children love McDonalds and most would rather have that than a sandwich. It isn't like it is a toddlers party.

Hula, can I be cheeky and ask how much the climbing party is? Considering one for ds, our climbing centre has a cafe attached so can do food.

Hulababy · 27/02/2011 12:30

We pay for blocks of people. I think minimum is up to 6 children and that is £89. Goe sup after that in blocks of 3. 12-15 people is £204 iirr. That's for two hours climbing session and 5 min snack in between. Includes all equipment, shoes and tuition.

Booked a climbing party for ds too, similar pricing £85 for 6 kids or £115 with food. They get all equipment and 1.5hours of climbing. Excited! We are doing ours on Sun 3rd, how about yours? Ds is miffed he will be at school on his bday this year as easter is later....

Mollie's party is on the 2nd April. She is actually on holiday for her birthday but I will be at work in the morning as I break up a week later. Dh is taking the day off.

Hope the party goes well. Mollie loves climbing. She has just started working towards her first climbing award. t the moment she onlt goes oce a fortnight though so may take a little while as she needs to get 10 climbs and belays in seperatly, so basically one a session.

This is party after all, my friend did this after a roller skating party and the kids loved it.

Asked DD about the pizza option - may be possible if traffic not bad. She is considering the options, lol. But would def not be able to have just basic cheese ones.

So options now are:

15 (or so) Happy Meals
3 pizza meals (6 large - 8 slice - pizzas, 6 boxes of chips and 3 cartons of coleslaw

or make it myself: sandwich, crisps and maybe a pack of fruit or something.

I agree with your DH, special treat.

dikkertjedap · 08/03/2011 19:06

I mean Happy Meals

compo · 08/03/2011 19:13

I think you should go for it
happy meals definitely fill my kids up
they have one every school holiday
it's a treat, god when I was 8 I had my whole party in a macdonalds pirate ship - do they still do those parties?!

Hulababy · 08/03/2011 19:29

I have gone for a mix of both :) Invites went out to do with an RSVP slip.
The children have a deciosn to make:

(a) Happy meal - with given choices for main, with fries and drink option

(b) sandwich box with roll and crisps and drink option.

I decided to give the option as DD did tell me at the weekend that one of the girls coming is veggie and MaccyDs doesn't do a veggie happy meal.

Only one RSVP (not bad after only going home at 4pm, lol) and it is for a Happy Meal with nuggets.

I will let you know the outcome and what they go for.

compo - not sure if they do parties. Whilst at sixth form, I worked at Wimpy, which then become BurgerKing, and was the senior Party Hostess. 4 parties consecutively on a Sunday - argh!
