Would you think I'm tight for not giving a party bag?

It's DD's first birthday this weekend. On Friday I've asked a bunch of mums and babies to meet us at a soft play place that has a toddler morning. I'd have had them round for coffee and cake at home but we're currently staying with my mum miles from anyone. We're a bit skint and the get-together is costing £2/head for about 16 babies. I'm going to take toddler nibbles as I don't suppose the place sells suitable stuff, and I'll buy everyone a coffee while we're there.

This weekend we went to a couple of parties for babies the same age, and everyone was given a pretty full party bag on the way out. I had no intention of doing this for DD's birthday - apart from anything else, though the stuff in the bags was thoughtful, she hasn't got a clue about it. We can't really afford to do them ourselves anyway - is this mean?!

No. I think that's fine. I hate this party bag thing that's become the norm, and the competitive filling of bags with tat.

The babies won't know or care either.

if you want you could do cheap party bags with baloons and crayons and sweets?

I would kiss your feet. No point buying or receiving tat which goes in the bin after 10 seconds. And for babies!!!! Butterbur is right - won't know or care.

Babies don't need part bags.

Most people do give a bag but I doubt anyone will call you on it if you don't. To be honest, most of the time it is stuff that gets thrown away after a couple of day anyway - I'd rather we didn't get it!

Instead of a bag we always buy multipacks of books and give one as a party gift. You can get them from places like school link or redhouse.

I wouldn't worry, its a first party, enjoy!

I don't think you need to do party bags for a first birthday, most of the kids are too young to know anyway :)

No I wouldn't think your tight. When my DD gets a party bag, I either end up throwing away the food or eating it myself.

I think by the end of a bday party she's already eaten enough junk without bringing any home.

Babies have no idea about the concept of party bags. SAve your money!
