Hello

DS1 and DS2 both want Star Wars birthday parties.

obviously light sabres are important props, can you recommend a way of making good ones - or buying some cheaply - which aren't going to hurt if the children hurt each other (which is inevitable)

we make them often out of wrapping paper tubes, but it is hard to get 10+ of these.

would appreciate some tips

thanks T4T

If you really fancy a challenge try the lightsaber balloon.

DS has just had a Star Wars party and though not for playing with, I made a batch of light sabres for party bags out of candy sticks.

All you do is paint edible lustre for the handle and paint the rest of the stick in blue blossom tint mixed with a bit of almond essence. They can also be used for decorating cakes with. I used one for Luke Skywalker on my cake.

I know someone who made them out of pipe lagging.

You can buy inflatable ones from eBay though they are shipped from the States so may take a few weeks to arrive.

Pipe insulation seems to be the easiest - a couple of friends of mine have done this for parties. One made them in advance herself, plus a papier-mache death star pinata; the other had the children make them as one of the party activities.

This blog has a whole load of star wars birthday party ideas - though I think the lightsabers my friends made were rather simpler - just the insulation plus duct tape handles.

Won't most of the guests already have one?

Ask them to bring them.

I've been saving up empty loo rolls, we're decorating those with Duct tape, paint on some black dots and stripes, then insert blown up modelling balloons (you know, the long type).
They look GREAT and the kids can't hurt themselves
