First time my son has been invited to a classmate's birthday party.

How much should I spend? Suggestions please!

I would say max £5 if just classmate or maybe a little more if a close friend. Loads of three for two at boots at mo for gifts maybe stock up for the next few party invit es! This seems to be the going rate for parties that my sons have been too. x

Depends on the school and the area IME £5 - £10 seems to be the norm (and £10 is my absolute limit, personally) but DS has received presents which, unless they were found at bargain prices, were a lot more than that. (I stress the "unless they were found at bargain prices" bit because I know I have bought things for £20 before now)

I would think somewhere around £5 will be not too far wrong in either direction.

Going rate here seems to be:

£5 if it is a big 'invite everyone in the class' affair in a hall

£10 if it is a smaller affair in someone's house or where a handful of friends are invited to a party at a farm or soft play centre

Upwards of this if it is a good friend

Varies, I keep an emergency stash for short notice parties but DS likes to choose himself so it can be anything from £8+

When the DDs were smaller and went to whole class parties I used to spend about £5 not including card and wrapping paper.

They are 11 & 8 now and parties are usually smaller affairs with good friends and are not quite so often. I usually spend £10 although DD2 is going to her very best friend's party this weekend and I spent £20 but it is her lifelong best friend and my good friends DD.

£10ish around here (sw london)

JeffCapes · 29/10/2010 19:25

£5-10 no more. A good idea can be to chip in with a few mums to buy a more expensive present between you.

£5-10 value here, however usually have stack of stuff that I bought at half price so didn't cost as much as that.

I spend about £5-£8 for a whole class type party.

DD is now older though and goes to ones where there are only 3 or four friends, so I spend £8-£10 on those ones.

I too buy things when I see them reduced and then get DC to choose something from my present cupboard.

bornorg · 02/11/2010 11:32

i tend to do £10 but often get things on a deal so end up spending £6-8

AccidentalAcelotyl · 02/11/2010 20:36

I try to keep to £5 - £6 and so do most people here. They get invited to lots of parties when they first strart school and it just gets really expensive otherwise.

Dexterrocks · 05/11/2010 14:26

In our village it tends to be around £8 although more for very close friends. Whenever we have parties, and we have had many, most of the gifts would be around this price. There are always the surprise, very expensive gifts but we live in a very wealthy area and some of the Mums forget we are not all really wealthy.
I too pick things up when I see them at good prices or 3 for 2 offers and keep a stock. Don't buy too many though as it is amazing how quickly things look out of date or stop being the latest craze.

bnamammy22 · 08/11/2010 12:39

i normally get things around £8-£15 for my sons best friedns or £5-10 for not as close wilkos have some good offers on as do asda and tesco, also if there are loads of children going to the party instead of the party boy/girl having loads of little presents he/she may not like a few of you could chip in for something better that the birthday boy/girl would really like ? x
