Wedding favours - first to go in frugal times?

My friend is starting a small business making wedding favours. They are definitely beautiful - gorgous hand tied, variety of "fillings" from the traditional to the modern and funky (at the request of the customer) and a choice of "wrapping" which she displays in a little catelogue. She started off with quite traditional types with net guaze / silk / lace bags etc and now has a small selection you can choose from (including boxes, bags, tubes etc) but all of the variety of something sweet (rather than alternatives such as candles or minitures etc which some people give instead)
We ordered some from her for our wedding and I was delighted. However she is now disappointed as business has been a bit rocky since the recession started and I have suggested that it is because favours are the "first to go" when people economise or at the least they make up their own cheaper versions (hers are not expensive as such but are more than the do it yourself)
Did you have favours at your wedding or equivalent party or do you think they are a waste of money? If you saw some really gorgous ones at a wedding fair or equivalent would you splash our or save the money for a better wedding dress or shoes honeymoon etc?

We had no favours as we had to cut back on something, so I guess your theory is correct!

Personally I think they are a waste of money as your guests are already having a fun filled day of food, drink, champagne, cake and dancing (and sometimes a free bar).

I think they are nice if you can get something inexpensive and a bit different, but otherwise a waste of time and money.

They can also be a bit cheesy too, depending on what it is ie personalised miniature bottles of whisky Hmm.

I didn't have them and that was before the recession. they are a lot of expense and effort and usually get left behind. I would rather spend the money on food and drink.

I didn't have them but that was ten years ago so not because of the recession, just dodn't like the idea of them and had a small, simple wedding.

Had a look at that website - there are some lovely things, but again, at £5 per favour, if you had 100 guests then it is £500 I'd rather spend on flowers/cake/shoes.....

We got married a couple of years ago and didn't have favours. At the time I just felt it was another unnecessary expense that no one would particularly miss.

We had favours but had a smallish wedding in Spain. Half bottle of Rioja for the men and a heart shaped Alessi spoon for the women. My FIL kept his wine to toast our first born. I didn't go with the sweets etc as they were a bit more expensive and I thought easily forgotten.
I did however buy some sugared almond favours for my DDs baptism. What is her website? I love to have things bookmarked just in case!

I didn't have them at our wedding, my mil baked cup cakes and we had those instead though tbh we didn't need those either really.
