5th birthday party. Should I do food for adults?

I'm doing a pretty traditional 5th birthday party for 25 ish children in a village hall.

At least 5 parents will stay (they are coming for the other side of town or walking, so it's not worth them going home), I've no idea about the rest.

Am I OK not to do food for the adults? Can I just suggest they help themselves to a cheese sandwich and chocolate crispy from the children's food?

For some reason I've got into a total tiz over this.

Tell them to help themselves from the kids stuff.

Thank you.

I bought a couple of packets of posh biscuits and some nice fruit juice and told them to help themselves. You've enough to do so keep it simple.

I usually do a hot meal for the adults- cicken and rice or a chilli or thai curry

LynetteScavo · 17/07/2010 20:40

You're scaring me now.

Nothing to it. You can buy a really good red thai curry sauce, some chicken and a couple of sweet pots or red peppers and it cooks itself

Rosebud05 · 17/07/2010 20:43

Definitely not a hot meal! Just tell them to help themselves from the kids stuff and lay on some tea/coffee if facilities exist and you get it together enough.

Honestly, most parents totally understand how much work goes into even a simple party and wouldn't expect to be catered for especially.

or even easier, mincemeat and a reaaly good ready made chilli con carne sauce(discovery is good). Cook for an hour. Place a little coriander and cheese on top.

LynetteScavo · 17/07/2010 20:46

Stop it!

Of course, one year I made pork fillet marinated with honey and thyme and roasted with a variety of root vegetables, served with butter bean mash..i have the recipe if you would like it

Er, maybe some other time. But thank you anyway.

You are making me hyperventilate.

mission accomplished

If you're anything like me you'll end up buying far too much stuff fpr the kids to eat and will be very glad of having a few adults around to help you eat it! Most adults enjoy muching a few crisps, biscuits, cakes etc. The only thing I do sometimes do for the adults is serve some bucks fizz! It's not too alcoholic for the ones who are driving and gives everyone a festive feel!

i am doing pizza and garlic bread for adults. mainly because i am doing individual boxes for kids and i will want some food myself!

amidaiwish · 23/07/2010 10:42

what time is the party?

Misspaella · 24/07/2010 16:15

I've literally just hosted (and survived) DS1 5th bday party. Only a handful of parents stayed and for my sanity and purse strings I did NOT do any 'adult' food. They helped themselves to the kiddie food. The children hardly ate (too excited and just want to eat crisps and mini sausages) so loads of pizza and crisps/veggies to pass round.

Enjoy.

nowwearefour · 24/07/2010 19:02

I have also hosted my dd1's 5th birthday party today. It was fine (althoguh some are naughty, arent they?!). Glad it is over now though!

LynetteScavo · 24/07/2010 19:11

The party was 3-5, so I just did a few bowls of adult crisps and adult soft drinks.

24 children who were all impeccably behaved. But only ate about 2 of the 1000 sandwiches I made.

well done lynette ! (have always liked your name btw!). not sure how you got them to be so well behaved - mine certainly were not. and i had heaps and eaps of fun games up my sleeves- they just liked my dd's climbing frame too much!

Misspaella · 24/07/2010 21:44

I am so glad it is over too. I was more stressed/anxious during this than my own wedding!

LynetteScavo · 24/07/2010 23:10

nowwearefour....I paid an entertainer to do all the hard work for me.The kids spent ages trying to spin plates on sticks. At the end he ate and breathed fire. Was quite impressive!

Just had dd's 5th birthday party- hall and entertainer - and did scones with jam and cream for adults which went down v well plus tea, coffee and soft drinks. Children had the usual party food - slices of pizza, sausages, crisps, cherry toms, strawberries, grapes, cakes - didn't do sandwiches cos as someone has already said, they never eat them!
