Car insurance

DS (20yo) passed his test in Nov. Since then we haven't had a car he could drive but we've got one now. What's the best way/ way to insure him over the long term? He probably won't drive a huge amount for now but would like him to keep driving and build up confidence.

Our friend does the insurance for a day type of thing for her son but wondered if that's not going to contribute to no claims. Is the black box type of insurance better? It's my car so he would just be a named driver. Advice pretty please and any recommendations of companies.

We used marmalade for our daughter in this situation. It was a couple of years ago, but we paid for the miles she drove. There was a box and an app so it knew who was driving. She earned a years no claims from this.

Get on an aggregator site and find out how much it costs. It will give you black box and non-black box policies.

A key thing is the model of the car, hope you looked into it.

Thanks both of you. That's great that the black box knows who is driving!

It's a 1.5L engine so it should be fine for insurance 🤞 . What is an aggregator site? Like confused.com?

we found that policies with parents on were quite alot cheaper than one person policies for young people

We used Marmalade too.

I have a family policy through Admiral. My car plus two others, one that belongs to one DS and the other which is shared by other DS and DD. I also have my house insurance on the same multi-policy which has reduced the costs across the board.

Thank you MEgirl, may be a thought for the future. I had an issue in that marmalade won't insure unemployed DS. Now we have a policy already for us, we need to somehow add him. I think it's going to be a ridiculous price.

Hastings Direct do one where you fit a small black reader (about 1 inch square) in the front windscreen and your child has the matching app on their phone. When they are about to drive, they activate the app and that will tell Hastings that it is him/her driving and not you.

PrincessOfPreschool · 19/04/2026 21:43

Thank you! Can you add that to an existing policy with a different provider? That is also what marmalade does but won't insure if you're currently unemployed.

I don't think marmalade provide a lot of the cover they did a few years ago, We used them for my Dd1 3 years ago but they cancelled her insurance 2 years ago saying they no longer provided that type of policy. We have found adding both our DC that drive to our existing Hasting's Direct insurance the cheapest option.

Two of mine are unemployed and are currently insured. One is still on a provisional licence. I should probably that details are up to date for the other one.
